Our Veterans
On Memorial Day, Windham’s American Legion will honor veterans who have passed away from May 2013 to the end of April 2014, at the Tolling of the Bell Ceremony. The Legion Post has maintained a list of veterans who had an association with Windham – born here, lived here, worked in town, etc. Please review the list below to ensure that your veteran and loved one will be recognized. If a veteran’s name has been omitted, contact Adjutant Dave Tanguay 892-1306 to have the veteran’s name included. The list, so far, is as follows: Robert Allan, Camille St. Michel-Beal, Rene Drouin, Erwin Emmons, Robert Farr, Elwin Godfrey, Vincent Gonska, Stanley Grant, William Harvey, Barry Lombard (Post 148), Robert Mannette, Stephen Falkner McKenney, Bruce Partridge, Arnold Rosario Sr., Ralph Salamone, Keith Sayward, Leon Smith, Robert Steele, Oscar Tabb, John “Jake” Tanguay, Wayne Theriault Sr., David Watkins and Gerald Wayne Weeks.
Free Mommie Aid IV
Everyone is welcome to “Mommie Aid” on Saturday, May 17, from noon-2 p.m. at Grace Church, 628 Gray Road. While supplies last, there are free diapers, wipes, shampoo, bath and body, and Clothes Closet from baby clothes to adults; food pantry, too.
Music with a Mission
On Tuesday, May 20, Elizabethtown College Concert Choir and Jazz Band, will be presented by Music with a Mission, North Windham Union Church, Route 302. Box office opens at 6:15 p.m., doors open at 6:30 p.m. Suggested donation is $5 for all ages. For more information call 892-7149 or MWAMconcerts@gmail.com.
Vets Invited
World War II veterans are invited to participate in the town of Windham’s Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony. American Legion Field-Allen Post 148 of Windham coordinates the Memorial Day events for the town and is looking for Windham WWII Veterans to come join the festivities. Call Post Adjutant, Dave Tanguay, 892-1306 for more information. If you are not a World War II veteran, you are most welcome to march/walk/ride in the parade. The parade starts at town hall, 8:45 a.m.
Winter is Over
Winter may be over but few of us have forgotten the extreme cold, the long days and did I say cold? Thanks to Windham Neighbors Helping Neighbors, dozens of Windham residents were helped to make it through. Donations recently received from Claire Cressey and Kevin and Anne Cornish are most welcome, as the group continues to fill its coffers for the coming winter. Thank you! on Medicare
On Tuesday, May 20, the Southern Maine Agency on Aging (SMAA) will offer a Medicare seminar and counseling for the Lakes Region at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church at 919 Roosevelt Trail, Windham. A “Welcome to Medicare” seminar is scheduled from 10 a.m. to noon. In addition to the Medicare seminar, there will be one-on-one counseling with volunteer Medicare advocates available from 9 a.m. to noon. The seminar and counseling are intended to help you sort through your Medicare options, answer questions and to help you enroll. In addition to Medicare assistance, counseling on tax and rent rebate, food stamps, and fuel assistance can be arranged. Please call the Southern Maine Agency on Aging to register for an upcoming seminar or to make a one-on-one appointment with a Medicare Advocate at 396-6500 or 1-800-427-7411. Seminar walk-ins can usually be accommodated. Further opportunities for these services will occur monthly on the first and third Tuesdays at the same times and location. Senior Center Moving
Effective Monday, June 2, the Lakes Region Senior Center will relocate for the summer to: White Rock Grange at 33 Wilson Road, Gorham. This will have easy, newly built access on the first floor of the beautiful old Grange building. The membership is very excited with this location for the summer and plan to still operate as a drop-in center 9 a.m.-1 p.m. We will have our daily activities and monthly events scheduled and advertised as we get our feet on the ground. Feel free to drop in for the opening and share a cup of coffee/tea and refreshment of the day on Monday, June 2.

Memorial Day
On Thursday, May 22, Bill Diamond will host Speakout on Windham’s local Channel 7 at 7 p.m. This month’s topic will be: Memorial Day and what it means. Guests will include Colonel Bob Akins – Retired U.S. Marine Corps. You are welcome to call in with your questions during the show at 892-0546. You are also welcome to come to the Windham Town Office, Council Chambers, and be part of the audience.
Marriage Intentions
Recent marriage intentions on file at the Town Clerk’s office include: Robert Larochelle and Courtney Chandler, both from Windham; Verne Mapes from New Hampshire and Andrea Casparius from Windham; Scott Foss and Michelle Libby, both from Windham; Lawrence Dunbar and Valerie Martin, both from Windham.
Library Book Club
The regular Windham Public Library Book Group is on break, January through May, while the “Making a Living, Making a Life” book group is going on. The next book discussion is May 27 at 6:15 p.m. The group will discuss “Confessions of an Advertising Man” by David Ogilvy. Artisans on the Green
Windham Historical Society’s 2nd annual Artisans on the Green will once again be part of Summerfest in Windham on Saturday, June 21. Historic exhibiters and crafters will display and demonstrate traditional skills of the mid- to late-1800s, using period methods and materials. The event is held on the society grounds, 234 Windham Center Road. Demonstrations include blacksmithing, rug braiding and other textiles; snowshoe re-lacing and binding, chair caning and weaving, wood and canvas canoe restoration, spinning and many more. This year’s event will also include the Maine Antique Engine group, a display of period engines. Suggested donation for the event is $5 per person (maximum of $20/family). All proceeds will benefit developing The Village Green. Hours are from 9 a.m.-3 p.m.
Allie Davis left, Walter Braley, middle, and Roger Timmons, members of the Field-Allen American Legion Post 148 in Windham, finish assembling about 100 American flags to be placed on utility poles throughout the town, beginning Saturday, May 17. Post members will meet at the fire station in North Windham and in teams of two or three will place flags on utility poles on the roadways.
