GORHAM – The attorney representing Gorham Town Councilor Benjamin Hartwell, who was charged with drunk driving in March, has entered a not guilty plea on behalf of Hartwell, according to Cumberland County Court documents.
Hartwell, 34, had been scheduled to appear for an arraignment hearing on Wednesday, May 14.
Attorney Paul Aranson, in a letter April 16 to the court, entered his appearance as attorney for Hartwell, waived reading of the complaint and entered a not guilty plea to the charge of operating under the influence.
Aranson did not return a call seeking comment on Tuesday.
A state of Maine crash report said that Hartwell was northbound on Fort Hill Road when he went off the road, struck a tree and rolled over at 12:34 a.m. on March 22. The vehicle was demolished, according to the report. Gorham Officer Ted Hatch investigated the incident.
Hartwell was transported to Maine Medical Center for a check of possible injuries and was released. Police summonsed Hartwell that same day.
According to court documents, Hartwell had a blood alcohol content of 0.15 or more. The state legal limit is under .08.
Hartwell has been scheduled for a dispositional conference on Tuesday, July 29.
