ORONO — Former University of Maine football standout Kendall James was selected by the Minnesota Vikings with the 184th pick in the sixth round of the 2014 NFL Draft on Saturday.
James is the first Black Bear to be drafted since Jerron McMillian was selected by the Green Bay Packers with the 133rd overall pick in the fourth round of the 2012 NFL Draft; Maine’s highest ever draft pick.
James, an Associated Press FCS All-American second team selection and first team All-Colonial Athletic Association honoree, led a Maine secondary which allowed a league-low 165.4 passing yards per game in 2013. James totaled 36 tackles, including 2.5 for loss, to go along with two interceptions, nine pass breakups and a blocked field goal attempt.
The former Black Bear finished his career at the University of Maine with 147 tackles, eight interceptions and 25 pass breakups in 48 games.
James is the 51st Black Bear to join a NFL team and the 15th to be officially selected in the NFL Draft.
