A Veterans’ Services officer from the Maine Bureau of Veterans’ Services will be available Wednesday, May 14 at Saco City Hall from 9-11 a.m.
The Biddeford Democratic City Committee meeting, originally scheduled to be held earlier in the month, has been rescheduled for May 14 at 7 p.m. Biddeford City Democrats will be joining Democrats from Saco and Old Orchard Beach at a special meeting to be held at the Old Orchard Beach Town Hall. Free skin cancer screenings will be offered from 6-8 p.m. May 15 at the Cancer Care Center of York County. The skin cancer screening is designed for residents who do not have insurance or are under-insured, are over the age of 60, or have not been screened by a dermatologist. Pre-registration is required, and slots are limited. Those who are interested are encouraged to call 1-844-504-9680 to obtain an appointment.
Frank Wood, co-proprietor of DeWolfe & Wood Rare Books in Alfred with Scott DeWolfe, will present a program on appraising old books at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 15 at the Sanford-Springvale Historical Museum. Both men worked for the Sabbathday Shaker Community in Maine, and in 1990, began doing book shows. Two years later, they opened their shop, which is located at 2 Waterboro Road in Alfred. The shop is filled with two floors of books, antiques, postcards, paper and more. During the program, Wood will review books that attendees have brought and estimate their background and value. The museum is located at 505 Main St. in Springvale and is handicap accessible. All are welcome to attend this program.

The “Best Websites for Readers” will be presented on Friday, May 16 from 12-1 p.m. at the Wells Public Library. Librarians Kristi Bryant and Cindy Schilling will demonstrate some of the best websites for book lovers, and they will show how to use these free websites to find books of all tastes, read series books in order, maintain a reading, and even share lists with friends and family. Women, Work and Community is holding a free workshop for women and men who are 50 and older at University College at Saco May 16 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Come explore what community agencies, educational services and professionals are available. This event is a collaboration with Women, Work and Community, University College at Saco, York County CareerCenter, Goodwill Workforce Solutions and Kerry Kenney, Independent Consultant. SWAPmaine Clothing Swap, set for May 17, will benefit Goodwill of Northern New England, and allow attendees to bring items the no longer want or need and take home others. The swap will take place at the East End School, 195 North St., Portland, from 10 a.m. to noon. Swap attendees who bring a bag of clothing, shoes, jewelry, accessories, etc., will get a “swag bag” provided by SWAPmaine, and leave with new-to-them items. Those who drop off a bag on Friday, May 16 between 4-6 p.m. or between 9-10 a.m. on Saturday at the East End School will get in free.
The next meeting of the Maine Chapter of the Association of Former Intelligence Officers will be held at the Brick Store Museum Program Center on May 17 at 2 p.m. The featured speaker will be Ken Daigler, a retired CIA operations officer, and author of the recently released book, “Spies, Patriots and Traitors: American Intelligence in the Revolutionary War.” As a historian and intelligence professional, Daigler is able to tell the story of intelligence during the Revolutionary period, and at the same time, tie it to current events. The first-ever Biddeford Community Open House & Carnival will be held on Saturday, May 17 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Biddeford High School on Maplewood Avenue. The public is invited. Parents will be able to connect with area resources, while children enjoy games and activities. There will be magic shows, musical performances, free food and fun for everyone. The event is organized and supported by area merchants, businesses, nonprofit agencies and the Biddeford School Department.

An Introduction to Wild Food Foraging with Josh Fecteau will be offered Tuesday, May 20 at 7 p.m. In this presentation, Fecteau, a naturalist, wild food forager and blogger, will cover essential guidelines and tips for safe, successful and satisfying foraging in your backyard and beyond. He’ll share photos of many of his favorite wild foods and bring a sampling of his preferred foraging books. Evening programs of York County Audubon are free, open to all and no reservations are needed.
