Well, it looks like the question of saving Saccarappa Park as a park will not be on the June ballot for Westbrook citizens to vote on. The petitioners were unable to get the 1,000-plus signatures required.
That in itself is a disappointment, but at the April 7 City Council meeting, I was alerted to possible trouble down the road that all citizens of Westbrook should be aware of.
Mayor (Colleen) Hilton asked Councilor (Michael) Foley during the public remarks period that she be on the record as saying, “There is no plan to develop Saccarappa Park (pause) RIGHT NOW” (my emphasis).
I asked to speak and addressed her caveat of “right now” so that viewers at home would understand that that means Saccarappa Park could indeed be developed in the future.
Six hundred ten voters signed the petition. Thank you!
If it is circulated again, please remember Mayor Hilton’s “on the record” remark and help tap Westbrook’s public spirit to get the 1,200 signatures required to allow the question to be voted on.
