Lighthouse group revamps website
The Spring Point Ledge Light Trust, which maintains and preserves the
Spring Point Ledge Lighthouse in South Portland, invites you to visit the group’s newly designed website.
Located at www.springpointlight.org, the website offers visitors a virtual tour of the lighthouse from top to bottom; a comprehensive history of the lighthouse and its keepers; and information about volunteering during the summer season. Visitors can also view a list of open house and other events, along with an interactive calendar.
The lighthouse is located on the breakwater at Fort Preble on the campus of Southern Maine Community College. It is one of the few lighthouses open each weekend from June to September, offering the public a unique opportunity to explore the interior of a working lighthouse.
Historical society seeks volunteers
The South Portland Historical Society is seeking volunteers to man its museum at Bug Light Park. The museum is open daily from May through October. Work as a museum guide or in the gift shop. All necessary training is provided. Volunteers are asked to cover one three-hour shift each week. Those interested in helping out should call 767-7299.
Library to hold martial arts event
The South Portland Public Library will hold a toddler martial arts introduction and story time event on Saturday, April 19, at 11 a.m. Riverview Foundation instructor Nina Henrikson will be on hand to teach some basic martial arts skills. Geared toward children 18 months to 3 years old. Pre-registration is required and the event will be held at the Main Library at 482 Broadway. R.E.M. member to sign records
Mike Mills, of the band R.E.M., will be at the Bull Moose store in Scarborough at 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 19, to sign records and speak with fans.

Legion taking Boys, Girls State applications
Applications are being taken for the summer statewide leadership program for high school juniors, Dirigo Girls and Boys State. Libby-Mitchell American Legion Post 76 of Scarborough has been sponsoring students for statewide leadership programs for 50 years.
The Legion will interview and choose one boy and one girl for the program. The Ladies Auxiliary will select and sponsor a third student from among the Scarborough High School juniors who apply for the positions.
The winning students attend a leadership legislature-style convention for a week in June, along with students from all over Maine. Students should contact the front office at Scarborough High School for the application form. Local Earth Day events scheduled
Many local organizations are planning cleanup events to mark Earth Day, officially celebrated on Tuesday, April 22. Volunteers are welcome to take part in either one or all of the following events:
• Saturday, April 26, 9 a.m.-noon
Scarborough Marsh Audubon Center, Pine Point Road. Join members of the Maine Audubon, the Friends of Scarborough Marsh and Project GRACE. Volunteers are also asked to bring nonperishable food items or grocery store gift cards. Email smac@maineaudubon.org for more information.

Fort Preble Conservation Committee will host its annual cleanup of the historic fort, located on Spring Point. The cleanup will be followed by a tour of the fort. Meet at the Bunker Lane parking lot, 123 McKernan Drive.

Inn by the Sea, Bowery Beach Road, Cape Elizabeth. The public is welcome to join 45 local students who will be on hand to help clean Crescent Beach with inn staff. In addition, guest speaker Fred Dillon, from South Portland’s Water Resource Protection Department, will give a brief talk about the importance and impact of clean water and pollution protection. Events to focus on startups
Startup Portland, Creative Portland, and the Portland Regional Chamber of Commerce are teaming up to host Maine Startup & Create Week, June 12-20.
Founded in 2014, Maine Startup & Create Week is an eight-day celebration of startups, innovators, and creative entrepreneurs in Maine. This week is designed showcase Maine’s vibrant, growing startup community to the greater Maine community and to visiting guests from around the country.
The week will include speakers, panels, social events, pitch events and others to celebrate the robust startup culture in Maine. Key events during the week include Startup Weekend, the PROPEL entreverge Awards, a startup bazaar, a startup career and internship fair, and numerous inspirational and educational programs.
