GORHAM – The Gorham Town Council on Tuesday authorized the renovation of the former Little Falls School, which is slated for future use as a recreation facility.

In a unanimous 7-0 vote, the council accepted a $487,800 proposal from Great Falls Construction of Gorham to perform renovation work.

Town Manager David Cole said voters had previously approved a $500,000 bond to pay for work.

The Lakes Region Senior Center had met in the former school, and the building also had housed some Gorham Recreation Department programs. It closed in September for repairs.

In January, the Town Council approved re-use of the former school as a community center. Gorham had eyed the school site for a $6.3 million public safety complex, but voters defeated the proposal in a referendum last year.

The single-story building opened as an elementary school in the mid 1950s.

The town of Gorham will be renovating the former Little Falls School for use as a recreation facility.
