LAKELAND, Fla. — Freshman Nick George pitched a one-hitter in his first start Thursday as the University of Southern Maine completed a doubleheader sweep of Worcester State with a 3-0 victory in nonconference baseball.
The Huskies (7-2) won the opener 2-1 on a combined five-hitter by Tyler Leavitt and Andrew Richards.
After giving up a two-out single in the first inning to the Lancers (3-6), George retired the final 19 batters he faced, striking out three without a walk.
The Huskies scored twice in the third on a sacrifice fly by John Carey and an RBI double by Sam Dexter, and added a run in the sixth on a squeeze by Jake Glauser.
In the opener, USM broke a 1-1 tie in the third inning when George Tsonis tripled and later scored on a throwing error.
SOFTBALL
ENDICOTT 4, SOUTHERN MAINE 0: The Gulls (5-2) took advantage of four passed balls during a three-run first inning and held off the Huskies (2-8) at Winter Garden, Fla.
USM starter Stefanie Stockwell gave up one earned run on five hits, striking out six and walking three over six innings.
Cara Radino had a pair of hits for the Huskies, who were held to five singles by Endicott starter Meg Donegan.
WORCESTER STATE 4, SOUTHERN MAINE 1: The Lancers (2-2) took advantage of errors during a three-run sixth inning to pull away from the Huskies (2-9) at Clermont, Fla.
Desiree Benner scattered six hits and didn’t allow an earned run for USM. She struck out seven and walked two.
Leanne Reichert drove in the USM run with a single in the sixth inning.
MEN’S LACROSSE
EASTERN CONNECTICUT 11, UNIVERSITY OF NEW ENGLAND 8: Mike Devine scored six goals for the Warriors (4-3), who closed with a 5-2 run to beat the Nor’easters (3-5) at Mansfield, Conn.
Patrick Wolfe scored four goals, and Geoff Bruno, Dan Auger, Mike Allan and Fritz Kleinhempel added one each for the Nor’easters.
WOMEN’S LACROSSE
SOUTHERN MAINE 13, ST. JOSEPH’S 6: Anh Nguyen and Shelby Turcotte each collected two goals and one assist for the Huskies (1-2), who led 9-2 at halftime and cruised past the Monks (1-5) at Portland.
Jacki Kelly and Rosie Forster added two goals apiece, and Nicole Laplante had a goal and two assists for the Huskies.
