BIDDEFORD — Harold L. “Huck” Hanson, 82, of Biddeford, died on March 10, 2014 at Southern Maine Health Care in Biddeford.

He was born in Saco on Feb. 13, 1932, the son of Harold H. and Josephine (Verrill) Hanson.

He attended local schools and was a 1949 graduate of Thornton Academy, where he was a three-sport athlete and captain of his basketball and baseball teams. He attended Farmington State Teachers College where he continued his athletic career, and then went on to earn his master’s degree in school administration from Atlantic Union College in Lancaster, Mass.

In 1973, he married Eleanor Springer in Biddeford.

Harold started his career as a teacher in Ashland and then Freeport in the early 1950s. In 1957, he became principal of the Shapleigh Elementary School, and then was principal and coach of school athletics at Lebanon Elementary School in the early 1960s. He became principal and boys basketball coach at Biddeford Junior High School, where he shaped his teams into state contenders.

In the 1960s, Harold was the varsity high school basketball coach for the former St. Anthony’s High School in Kennebunk, where he guided his boys to the Western Maine finals. In the 1990s, he was varsity girls basketball coach at Kennebunk High School, where his team won the school’s first state championship in 1993, and was a perennial tournament contender for a number of years. He then went on to coach the women’s basketball team at Wentworth Institute of Technology in Boston.

Harold was a representative to the Maine State Legislature for two terms from 1978-82, representing Kennebunkport, Arundel and Lyman. He was most recently employed with National ABLE, a job placement network for the elderly as their regional manager for the York County office.

Harold was an accomplished genealogist and published two volumes on the history of the Seavey family in the United States.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by: a son, Eric B. Hanson; and his sister, Emma Lussier.

He is survived by: his wife of 41 years, Eleanor Hanson of Biddeford; two daughters, Marina Ekman and her companion Tsuan Li of San Francisco, Calif. and Adelina Esquerra and her companion David of Berkeley, Calif.; five sons, H. Howard Hanson and his wife Doris of Biddeford, Peter D. Hanson and his wife Joan Halpert of West Roxbury, Mass., Andrew J. Hanson and his wife Stephanie of Auburn, N.H., Vance Brooks of Pittsburgh, Pa. and Nathan Hanson and his wife Kathleen of Templeton, Mass.; one niece, Bethany Smith and her husband Paul of Manchester, N.H.; 12 grandchildren; and one grandniece.

The family will hold visiting hours from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, April 26, 2014 at Hope Memorial Chapel in Biddeford. A noon funeral service will follow at the funeral home, after which he will be buried in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Biddeford. Arrangements are by Hope Memorial Chapel, 480 Elm St., Biddeford, ME 04005.
