Father-Daughter Dance set for March 1

The South Portland Parks and Recreation Department will be hosting the 13th annual Father-Daughter Dance on Saturday, March 1, from 6-8 p.m. Registrations are now being taken at the Community Center and are $10 per child. Dads are free.

This is an all-ages event for dads, grandfathers, stepfathers, uncles, etc., and their daughters. Sorry, moms, you will have to sit this one out! Tap Fitzgerald of Sideshow Entertainment will provide music. There will be light refreshments, including a chocolate fountain. A professional photographer will be on hand to take pictures at an additional cost, paid directly to the photographer.

Pre-registration is required for this event. Registrations will be taken until 9 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 28, or until space fills up, whichever comes first. Tickets will not be sold at the door.

Democrats caucus March 2

The South Portland Democrat party will gather for their biennial caucus on Sunday, March 2, at 1 p.m. in the Senior Wing at the South Portland Community Center. Although this year does not feature a presidential contest and the gubernatorial candidacy of Mike Michaud is all but assured, organizers say the caucuses in South Portland and throughout the state are a significant milestone in Maine’s political process.

“The caucus is a great opportunity for Democrats in South Portland to join together to support our state and local legislative candidates as they prepare for the important election later this year,” said South Portland Democratic City Committee Chair Matthew Beck.

The caucus will also feature the election of South Portland’s delegates to the State Democratic Convention and officers of the South Portland Democratic City Committee. Other Democratic party business will also be conducted at the caucus and Democrats will have an opportunity to express their views about the future of their party.

Doors for the caucus will open at 12:30 p.m. Unenrolled (independent) or unregistered voters will be able to register as Democrats on Sunday, March 2, at the Community Center before the caucus convenes. (The deadline for Republicans to switch to the Democrat party in order to be eligible to participate in the caucus was Feb. 15.)

Lucy Hale, co-star of the ABC Family television show Pretty Little Liars, performs a benefit concert last month at South Portland High School. The event, arranged with help from senior parents Karen and Corey Garrison and radio station 99.9/99.3 FM The Wolf, raised more than $4,100 for Project Graduation, an all-night chemical-free celebration for seniors that occurs right after the annual high school graduation ceremony. The Project Graduation committee is a parent-run group that raises between $10,000 and $15,000 every year to put on the event.
