The chief officers, officers and firefighters of the Sanford Fire Department would like to provide a few winter safety tips to help keep you and your family safe.

Fire safety starts with a good fire escape plan. All members of the family should know how to get out of your home in the event of an emergency. Make sure all of your exits are clear of snow and ice, so you and your family can exit quickly and safely. Make sure all your heat equipment is cleaned and inspected by a qualified professional every year. Keep flammable material three feet away from any heat source. Make sure all vents are clear of snow. When they become blocked, carbon monoxide can back up into your home. The most important thing you can do for your family’s safety is to purchase and install smoke and carbon monoxide detectors on each floor of your home. If you need any help in mounting your detectors, contact the fire department at 324-9160.
