I am writing this letter to comment on the editorial, “Fuel funds need your donations,” American Journal, Jan. 30, written by John Balantine, managing editor.
Thank you for a timely commentary on an important issue, especially this season with some of the coldest weather we have had in a few years. Making information available and raising awareness for assistance options to a lot of people who do not know where to turn for help is an invaluable service.
I live in Gorham and the town does have a general assistance fund, but it has already been depleted for this year. Therefore, if businesses or individuals would be inspired to donate, please do so, as every little bit helps your community. The heating season is only half over and many people are feeling stressed this year.
As Mr. Balantine mentioned, call the Town Clerk or the 211 information line for additional information. To donate in Gorham: Town of Gorham, 75 South St., Gorham, ME 04038. Maybe this would be a good fundraising project for youth groups in late summer for next season.
Thank you for your help.
