For as long as I can remember, I have found ice skating absolutely captivating. Just for a day, it lets me be young again ”“ bringing me right back to the frozen winding streams and ponds I remember from my childhood. I have forgotten much, but I still remember how beneath a sky of cobalt blue we skated like we had wings.
As I observe the skaters skimming over the ice at the West Brook Skating Rink on my way to the Biddeford Public Access Studio, it brings back memories that time and distance cannot separate. It is nostalgic to see folks of all ages celebrating the skating season. The warm apparel, neighborhood children, biting winds, childhood games, fun, hope and joy make for wonderful memories. Many, many folks have happy West Brook Skating Rink memories. Childhood is fleeting ”“ it’s gone all too soon.
Ice skating can be done for a variety of reasons, including exercise, leisure, traveling and different sports. I always appreciate the artistry that is found hidden within technically challenging programs. I know it isn’t nearly as fun to watch as the high-flying jumps or the fast-moving spins, but it’s just as important, in my opinion.
Other skating enthusiasts will be able to get their fill watching all of the skaters representing the U.S. in Sochi for the Olympic Games later this month. The competition will certainly be one worth watching. There is beauty in what happens on the ice.
Back here in Biddeford, locals can take advantage of free skating during WinterFest, sponsored by Heart of Biddeford, on Sunday, Feb. 8 from 3-6 p.m. at the West Brook skating rink, located at 234 Pool Road in Biddeford.
Also during this year’s WinterFest, skiers and snowboarders will compete in the Big Air and Rail Jam contest Friday, Feb. 7 at the main attraction of the event: the more than three-story-high tower and snow hill that will be built in City Square. On Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 8-9, the hill will be open for sledding to the general public.
In other news, the final day of “Smart About Money,” a drop-in, free, financial workshop, will be at McArthur Public Library on Saturday, Feb. 8 from 10-11 a.m. The workshop is led by Richard Butler, a financial advisor, in the library’s Community Room. Stop by to ask questions about all things financial. Materials are provided by the National Endowment for Financial Education. No registration is required. The library is located at 270 Main St., Biddeford.
