The New England Sled Dog Organization informed Westbrook officials Thursday that due to poor trail conditions at Sunset Ridge Golf Club, the races scheduled for this Saturday and Sunday will be postponed until Feb. 15-16.

During last year’s festival, the popular sled dog races were seen as a main event, but a forecast for high temperatures and rain played into the organization’s decision to postpone this weekend’s event.

According to a post on the Winter West Festival Facebook page, the current conditions at Sunset Ridge are considered dangerous.

“Currently, there is lots of ice, as well as some bare spots, and, with the rain and warm weather coming, they expect the trails to get even worse,” the post said. “Sorry for the inconvenience, but there’ll still be plenty to do in Downtown Westbrook.”

The festival kicks off tomorrow night with a downtown “pub crawl” and Family Skate Night in Riverbank Park.
