SOUTH PORTLAND –The South Portland City Council filled half of 10 open seats on volunteer boards and committees Monday, making appointments to the conservation commission, library advisory board and board of assessment review by relying largely on familiar faces.

Walnut Street resident Sara Zografos will serve on the conservation commission through November, 2016, filling out the term of William Sutton, who moved to Fryeburg. A planner with the Maine Turnpike Authority, Zografos holds a master’s degree in community planning and development.

Colleen Turner-Jones of Boothby Avenue, was reappointed to another three-year term on the Library Advisory Board, though December 2016. A self-employed therapist, Turner-Jones said she has “always viewed libraries as the heart of a community,” and wanted to continue serving to help promote literacy projects.

Reappointed to new three-year terms to December 2016 on the Board of Assessment Review, were Margaret Johnson of Pennsylvania Avenue, Nancy Field of Willard Street, and Russell Barrows of Blueberry Drive. Johnson is a self-employed lawyer while Field and Barrows both work in real estate, she as a Realtor with Keller-Williams Realty, he as an appraiser with Diversified Appraisal Services.

The City Council still has five openings to fill, including two more on the board of assessment review (Districts 2 and 5), one on the library advisory board (District 4), one on the conservation commission (District 2) and one on the community development advisory committee (District 3). All open posts are through 2016 except for the conservation commission seat, which is an unexpired term ending in November.

Anyone interested in filling one of the open committee assignments can fill out an application on the boards and committees page of the city website, which also contains a street listing for each district.
