Saturday, Jan. 18: A bean supper, takes place 5-6 p.m. at People’s United Methodist Church, 310 Broadway, South Portland. On the menu are baked beans, casseroles, homemade pies and more. $8 each or $17 per family.

Jan. 18: The 25th edition of Scarborough Winterfest takes place noon-5 p.m. at the Scarborough municipal outdoor ice rink next to Wentworth Intermediate School. There will be ice-skating events for kids and families and non-skating events as well. A King and Queen of Winterfest for kids and a Winterfest Family will be crowned. Sponsored by the Scarborough Community Services, there will be free hot chocolate and popcorn. A snack bar is available as well.

Jan. 18: The Scarborough Public Library Knitting Group will be hosting a Knitting Party 10 a.m.-noon in the library meeting room. The welcoming knitters will be creating a casual “parlor-style” gathering with lots of knitting samples, refreshments and a display of some of the great fiber arts books from the library’s collection. Come learn how to knit.

Monday, Jan. 20: A Community Cafe Senior luncheon will be held at noon at Blue Point Congregation Church, 236 Pine Point Road, Scarborough. Reservations are required by Jan. 16 with Pam at 510-4974. On the menu is salisbury steak and gravy, mashed potatoes and veggies. Bring a buddy.

Thursday, Jan. 23: The South Portland/Cape Elizabeth TRIAD has invited a member of the Portland Police Department to speak at its January forum. The topic will be “Understanding 9-1-1.” Topics will include dialing 9-1-1 with all communication technologies (cellphones, smartphones, landlines, etc.); when to dial 9-1-1; knowing what information to have available for telling the dispatcher, and understanding what happens during and after calling 9-1-1. The talk is free to all. It will be held at 2 p.m. at the Cape Elizabeth Fire Station Training Room (2 Jordan Way). Light refreshments will be served.
