In Sanford, drivers found the morning commute to be an icy one, with rain freezing on contact with the cold roads and flooding on some streets due to iced-over storm drains.

Deputy Police Chief Tim Strout said Cottage Street, which is state Route 109, was closed for a time this morning due to flooding.

“There are icy conditions all over,” said Strout at 8 a.m. At that time, he said, the side streets were particularly icy, but there had also been several slide-offs on Route 4 near the North Berwick town line.

Donna Gray of Sanford Public Works said the rain and snowmelt is creating puddles, but there’s ice underneath, which made for a slippery commute. She said the public works crews have been out salting, but still, the department expects some flooding will occur.

And while ice is the problem today, the area has also had its share of snow. Gray said since this winter season began, Sanford has had 46 inches of snowfall.

Schools in sprawling Regional School Unit 57 were closed for a third day. The district includes the inland towns of Alfred, Limerick, Lyman, Shapleigh, Newfield and Waterboro, where roads were slick this morning. School had been scheduled to open Thursday, Jan. 2 from the Christmas and New Year’s break, but a hefty snowstorm meant a closure that day and Friday, as well.

While temperatures were expected to warm up today, forecasters say they’ll plunge overnight, which could mean another ice-up Tuesday morning.

In Biddeford, Public Works Director Guy Casavant said this morning that the “main roads are in pretty decent shape.” He said employees had been at work since last night salting and sanding the roads.

However, said Casavant, the city’s back roads are very slippery. This morning, workers were concentrating on taking care of those roads, while maintaining the good condition of the city’s most-traveled roads, he said.

Despite the slick conditions of some of the roads, as of 8:30 a.m. today the fire department had no accidents to report in Biddeford.

Saco Emergency Managament Director Steven Boucouvalas said there were many incidents of standing water in roads, and around 8:30 a.m. said there were about half a dozen slide-offs, but no injuries.
