- A veterans’ service officer from the Maine Bureau of Veterans’ Services is available the second Wednesday of each month at Saco City Hall from 9-11 a.m. This service is weather permitting. For more information, call 324-1839.
- Anyone who would like to learn how to borrow books from the Maine Download Library should join the staff of Wells Public Library on Wednesday, Jan. 8 from 1:15-3 p.m. Staff will show participants how to search and find books that will work on tablets, how to download them, how to customize loan periods, how to place holds on popular items and more. “A Matter of Balance,” a nationally recognized class designed to help manage falls and increase activity levels, will teach people how to view falls as controllable, set goals for increasing activity, exercise to increase strength and balance, and make changes to reduce fall risk at home. The next class will be held at Biddeford YMCA, beginning Thursday, Jan. 9 and running weekly through Feb. 20, 1-3 p.m. For more information or to register, call 283-0100.

- The monthly Lunch & Learn program at Wells Public Library will feature authors and Maine bird experts, Jeffrey and Allison Wells on Friday, Jan. 10 from 12-1 p.m. They will discuss the birds that can be found in Maine year-round. They will have copies of their book available to sell and sign after the event. Feel free to bring a bag lunch, and the library will provide drinks and dessert. The Lyman Republican Committee will meet on Saturday, Jan. 11 at 10 a.m. at the Community Library in Goodwin’s Mills. The group will be discussing an important document and preparing for the upcoming caucus, which takes place at the February meeting. All Lyman registered Republicans are invited to attend.

The Wicker Pigs benefit concert, to support LearningWorks YouthBuild Biddeford, will be held at Biddeford City Theater, 205 Main St., on Saturday, Jan. 11 at 7 p.m. The concert will be contemporary folk music. There will be baked goods for sale along with a raffle. Admission is $5. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.

The next Pasco Author Lecture Series at Louis T. Graves Memorial Public Library in Kennebunkport will feature Susan Conley reading from her new novel, “Paris Was The Place,” on Sunday, Jan. 12 at 2 p.m. Conley is a novelist, creative writing professor and memoirist. Her new novel is an Amazon Fall Big Books Pick for fiction, an Indie Next Pick and an Elle Magazine Readers Prize Pick. A native of Maine, Conley earned her bachelor’s degree from Middlebury College and her master’s degree in creative writing from San Diego State University. After teaching poetry and literature at Emerson College in Boston, Susan returned to Portland, where she co-founded and served as executive director of The Telling Room, a nonprofit creative writing center for students ages 6-18. Graves Library is offering this series at no charge, and it is open to the public. The series is sponsored by Kennebunk Savings Bank and The Stephen and Tabitha King Foundation. - The Saco Democratic City Committee and Saco Bay Dems monthly joint meeting will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 14 at 7 p.m. in the first-floor conference room in Saco City Hall, 300 Main St. If there is a city meeting in the conference room, the group will meet at the third-floor break room. All interested Democrats who live in the Saco Bay area ”“ Biddeford, Saco, Old Orchard Beach, Dayton, Buxton or Hollis ”“ are encouraged to attend.
- A moonlight walk, snowshoe or cross country skiing tour on the Biddeford section of the Eastern Trail will take place at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 14. The route will include an area that has seen a great deal of beaver activity, with evidence visible from the trail. No flashlights or pets are permitted. Meet at the rear of the Southern Maine Medical Center parking lot. The hospital is located off Route 111 in Biddeford. For more information, contact Joe Yuhas at folk44@aol.com or 283-4487.
- The Saco Republican Committee will be meeting Tuesday, Jan. 14 at 6 p.m. upstairs at the Recreation Center on Franklin Street. All registered Republicans are welcome to discuss plans for the forthcoming caucus and annual Lincoln Day Breakfast in February.
