BRUNSWICK — Three members of the National Champion Bowdoin College field hockey team have been recognized as NFHCA Division III All-Americans for the first time in their careers.

Senior co-captains Katie Riley and Olivia King, along with sophomore Rachel Kennedy were all recognized as Second Team All-American selections. The three also collected First Team All-NESCAC and First Team All-Region nods for the 2013 season.

The offensive trio led Bowdoin to an NCAA title, the second leading scoring margin, 3.23, in the country and fifth best 4.27 goals per game scoring average. The Polar Bears finished as runner-up at the 2013 NESCAC Tournament and tallied a pair of wins at the NCAA Regional, securing a trip to the Final Four. Bowdoin received a first round bye and defeated SUNY New Paltz 5-2 in a second round game hosted by Montclair State, then went on to defeat the number-one ranked Red Hawks in the regional final with a 1-0 win.

The Polar Bear faced Christopher Newport in the semifinals, punching their ticket to the championship game with a four-goal outpouring from Kennedy and Riley against the thirdranked defense in Division III. The 4-1 win marked the most goals allowed by Christopher Newport in the entire season. Kennedy notched the game-winner in Bowdoin’s 1-0 win over Salisbury to bring home Bowdoin’s fourth National Championship. Riley, Kennedy and King were all recognized as All-Tournament selections at the conclusion of the weekend, with King garnering MVP honors.

Riley and Kennedy were the top scoring teammates in the NESCAC this season. The pair ended the season tied with 21 goals apiece. Combined, they accounted for nine of Bowdoin’s 10 goals in the NCAA Tournament and became Bowdoin’s all-time highest scoring teammates. The 109 points tallied by the pair surpassed the mark set by Lindsay McNamara and Ingrid Oelschlager (96 points) set in 2007.

Riley’s 59 points led the NESCAC and rank third in a single-season in Bowdoin history. Her 17 assists led the conference and tied second all-time for assists in a year by a Polar Bear. Riley ends her Bowdoin career with 46 goals (fifth all-time) and 35 assists (fourth all-time) for 127 points, ranking second behind McNamara as the alltime leader.

Despite missing two games due to injury, Kennedy tallied 21 goals while adding eight assists this fall. The 2012 NESCAC Rookie of the Year co-led the league in goals with Riley, and after just two campaigns already stands ninth in Bowdoin history with 36. Kennedy accounted for the game-winning goal in Bowdoin’s 1-0 win over Montclair State to advance to the Final Four, as well as the only goal against Salisbury in the title game.

King is a two-time All- New England honoree and makes her first appearance as an All-American in 2013. King dominated in Bowdoin’s midfield this season while playing a pivotal role in corner execution.

A key to Bowdoin’s highscoring transition game, King recorded a goal and eight assists this fall for Bowdoin. King’s key assist came on a corner against Montclair State as she hit a hard drive from the top of the circle, which Kennedy tipped in to lift the Polar Bears.

Following a commanding performance in the semifinals and finals, the participating coaches selected King as Tournament MVP. Over her career at Bowdoin, King started in all 82 games the Polar Bears have played.
