Beer and wine distributors employ more than 1,000 Mainers and contribute roughly $19 million a year to state and local tax revenue, according to a report issued Thursday on the industry’s economic impact.

The report, commissioned by the Augusta-based Maine Beer and Wine Distributors Association, found that the industry has created more than 2,000 additional jobs at related businesses and organizations in the state.

Beer and wine distributors spend about $345 million a year on operations, and the employees of distributors and their vendors spend about $168 million annually at Maine businesses, the report said.

The report’s authors said that in terms of employment, beer and wine distributors are equal to the size of Maine’s data processing and Web-hosting industry, and about half as large as the state’s machinery manufacturing industry.
