BRUNSWICK — The Bowdoin College men’s basketball team handed Babson their first setback of the season with a 66-54 home win on Sunday afternoon in Morrell Gymnasium.

The Polar Bears extend their win streak to 4-0, while dropping the Beavers to 4-1.

Matt Mathias led the Polar Bears with 15 points, while John Swords chipped in with 13 points and a teamhigh seven rebounds. Andrew Madlinger had 11 points, and classmate Grant White chipped in with 10 points, three rebounds and two assists for the Polar Bears.

John Wickey lead the Beavers with 18 points and six rebounds, while teammates Eric Dean and David Mack each added 10 points. Mack also had six rebounds, including five on the offensive end, while Kenny Ross dished out a game-high six assists.

Babson knocked down four of its first six 3-pointers, including back-to-back triples from Matt Palazini and Dean to take a 12-11 lead at the 13:39 mark of the opening half. Bowdoin came right back, getting a 3-pointer from White, followed by hoops from Lucas Hausman and Mathias to go in front, 18-12, with 11:33 left in the stanza.

Trailing the Polar Bears by nine following a pair of free throws from Madlinger, five straight points from Mack helped the Beavers get within 29-25 at the 3:46 mark. Bowdoin closed the half with an 11-0 run that included five points from Mathias, and three each from Swords and Madlinger to give the Polar Bears a 40-25 leading heading into the break.

The Polar Bears took their biggest lead of the game at 53-34 following an offensive rebound and put back by Swords with 7:36 to go in the game. Dean tried to keep the Beavers in the game, scoring seven straight points to trim the deficit to 53-41 with 5:29 to go, but Pieri knocked down a jumper, and converted a feed from Mathias to put Bowdoin up 57-41 with 3:29 left.

The Polar Bears shot 11- for-18 from the floor in the second half and shot 60 percent (27-for-45) for the game. Babson struggled to find its offensive rhythm in the second half, shooting just 33 percent (9-for-27) from the floor and 26.7 percent (4-for- 15) from behind the arc.

Bowdoin will be at the University of Southern Maine on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.

Men’s hockey

Matt Rubinoff scored two goals and supplied one assist as Bowdoin downed visiting UMass-Dartmouth 5-1 in the final game of the Colby-Bowdoin Faceoff Classic at Sidney J. Watson Arena.

The Polar Bears (4-2-1) skated away with the weekend title after winning both of their matchups. Rubinoff was named Bowdoin-Colby Faceoff MVP following a three goal, one assist, weekend. The Corsairs tied Colby 4-4 on Saturday, but fell to 2- 6-1 with Sunday’s loss.

The Polar Bears controlled the opening minutes of the first half as Rubinoff tipped in Bowdoin’s first goal of the game just 4:30 into the frame. Johnny Malusa sent a pass to Mitch Barrington on the far side, who ripped a slap shot that Rubinoff tipped.

Colin Downey put the Polar Bears up 2-0 12:51 into the period as he pick-pocketed the puck from a Corsairs defender and turned on the goalie. JJ Solloway was left to face Downey in a one-onone situation, before the Polar Bear wristed a shot through the five-hole.

The Corsairs came out with increased offense pressure in the second period, scoring just 3:10 into play. Bowdoin goalie Steve Messina skated behind the net to clear a loose puck that then squirted out front of the open net where Evangelos Stefanou was able to collect it and bury the Corsairs’ only goal of the game.

Bowdoin answered back to take the 3-1 lead with a goal 15:22 into period. Downey controlled the puck low on the left side and crossed a quick pass to Rubinoff just outside the crease on the opposite post who one-timed it for Bowdoin’s third of the game.

Bowdoin controlled the final frame of the game, scoring a pair of goals less than 10 minutes in. Connor Quinn stopped a hard pass and lofted a shot over the shoulder pad of Solloway to take the 4-1 lead. John McGinnis and Rubinoff connected for Bowdoin’s fifth and final goal 9:54 into the period. Rubinoff offered up a feed out front for McGinnis who skated in on the puck and tallied the final goal.

Bowdoin outshot the Corsairs 47-11, with both Messina and Solloway playing all 60 minutes.

On Saturday at Waterville, the Polar Bears rolled to a 5- 0 win over Suffolk University.

Bowdoin opened up the first period of play with goal from Gabriel Renaud 9:56 into the contest. Bowdoin outshot the Rams 13-7 in the opening period.

Rubinoff tallied his second goal of the season 7:17 into the middle frame. Jay Kourkoulis and Kendall Culbertson were each credited with an assist.

The Polar Bears’ offense continued to click as Downey scored with seven minutes remaining in the second frame. Downey notched his second goal of the day with less than five minutes remaining in the game, and 20 seconds later Connor Quinn tallied his second of the season.

Messina recorded his fourth career shutout with 22 saves. Smolarek made 36 stops in net for the Rams.

Bowdoin is slated to host Connecticut College on Friday at 7 p.m.

Women’s ice hockey

Madeline Lane scored a pair of goals as the Polar Bears went on to collect their second straight victory with a 2-1 win over host Holy Cross on Saturday evening.

The Polar Bears improved to 2-2, while dropping the Crusaders to 5-3.

Bowdoin scored its first goal of the game with less than five minutes remaining in the second frame. Lane took a feed inside the blue line and wristed a high shot to the left corner as Schuyler Nardelli screened Krista Manzanares for a power-play goal.

The Crusaders evened the score at 1-1 just 3:20 into the third period. Rose Rather took the feed from Izzy Bagi to net the equalizer.

With under three minutes to play in the game, Lane tallied the game winner with a similar power-play goal. Positioned in the center of the ice, Lane fired off a quick slap shot that went left post for the 2-1 lead.

Bowdoin’s Beth Findley made 28 stops in net. Holy Cross’ Manzanares stopped 11 shots in net.

The Polar Bears are be back in action when they host New England College at 7 p.m. on Tuesday night.
