In 1951, a photo of a little girl and her dog was hung up on the wall at the Maine Central Depot. The photo sat there, unremarked, as the building fell into disuse and was finally removed in the 1960s.

But the photo survived and was restored, and once again is on the walls of a train station. This time, the little girl shyly smiles at people who are waiting for the Downeaster or Maine Eastern excursion trains at the brand-new depot.

People Plus recently ran a contest to find someone who could recognize the girl, and maybe the dog as well.

Frank Connors of People Plus, who sponsored the contest, said he got half a dozen correct responses — those who knew both the little girl and her little dog, too.

However, when the name of the final winner was drawn from all those that responded correctly, it was a family affair.

The winner was the aunt of the little girl in the photo, who turned out to be Patty Sparks. The little dog’s name was Trixie.

Her aunt, Rosalie Dechenes of Brunswick, won a round-trip ticket to Boston from the Brunswick Downtown Association, and a yearlong membership at People Plus.

“I’ve never been on the Downeaster,” she said. “I’m very excited.”
