Club searching for grant recipient
The Freeport Woman’s Club is looking for a candidate for its 2013 Step Up Grant, a $1,000 gift for a woman 21 or older from Freeport or Pownal who is seeking occupational training and has financial need. Criteria for selection of the applicant are based upon financial need, clarity of goals, educational program and references.

Volunteers needed for reading programs
Freeport Community Services is seeking volunteers to read to children in day care programs. Volunteers will need to be able to drive to a nearby day care location and spend 45 minutes once a week reading to young children, who will benefit from and enjoy the experience as do the readers.

Birds of prey topic of program
Freeport Community Library will host a program on Wednesday, Dec. 4, at 6 p.m., presented by Wind Over Wings, a nonprofit education service featuring birds unable to survive in the wild. Each bird is an individual and each has a story. The program will feature the golden eagle, the saw-whet, the red-tailed hawk, and a little falcon, the American kestrel.
Guest preacher at First Baptist Church
The Rev. Dr. Dennis L. Gill will be the guest preacher at the First Baptist Church, 185 Main Street, Freeport, on Sunday, Nov. 24, at 10:45 a.m. Gill is a graduate of Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary and is president of the Evangelical Network of New England. He has pastored and planted churches in Massachusetts, North Carolina and New Jersey, and is on the staff of Hope Community Church in Newburyport, Mass. Olive oils, vinegars at new store
A company that features in-store tasting rooms for its artisan olive oils and vinegars will open its new store at 58 Main St. in Freeport on Thursday, Nov. 21.
Fiore Artisan Olive Oils & Vinegars will sell extra virgin olive oil that offers “transparency and purity for the consumer who respects the harmony of nature and nutrition,” according to its website.
The store will be open from 11 a.m.-7 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and from noon-6 p.m. Sundays. It features in-store tasting rooms offering a wide selection of premium extra virgin, first, cold-pressed olive oil from around the world and aged balsamic vinegar from Modena, Italy.
Library to host Alzheimer’s workshop
“Know the 10 Signs: Early Detection Matters,” a workshop presented by the Alzheimer’s Association, has been scheduled for Tuesday, Dec. 3, from noon-1 p.m. at the Freeport Community Library, 10 Library Drive. The interactive workshop featuring video clips of people with Alzheimer’s is meant to give a better understanding of the difference between age-related memory loss and dementia, and what to do if you or someone you know is experiencing signs of Alzheimer’s disease. Early detection of Alzheimer’s gives people a chance to begin drug therapy, enroll in clinical studies and plan for the future.

Photo exhibit continues
The Freeport Community Library is featuring an exhibit of photography by Judy Plouffe, titled “New Beginnings – Sunrises of Freeport,” during November.
Plouff moved to Freeport in November 2011 from Montpelier, Vt. After seeing her first sunrise in Freeport, she decided to begin a year-long project of photographing the sunrise every morning for a year.
Employment opportunity
The Freeport Train & Information Center is accepting resumes for a part-time attendant. The position requires initiative and ability to work independently. Applicants must possess strong customer service, clerical, computer and telephone skills, plus the ability to work in a multi-faceted environment. Knowledge about Freeport and the surrounding area is a plus. The successful applicant will receive training.
This position is for the 7 a.m. shift on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. The position will also require some Sunday and holiday shifts. Estimated weekly hours vary from 8 to 12-plus hours. Pay is $10 per hour.

Public hearing Dec. 3
A public hearing is scheduled for Tuesday, Dec. 3, at 6:30 p.m., in the Council Chambers at the Freeport Town Hall to discuss the Regional School Unite 5 withdrawal article on the Dec. 17 ballot.
Absentee ballots available
Absentee ballots are now available at the Town Clerk’s Office, for the Dec. 17 special election on whether the town should begin the RSU withdrawal process. The polls will be open that day from 7 a.m.-8 p.m. in the Town Hall Council Chambers. Holiday fair, lunch Nov. 23
The Freeport Lioness-Lions will host its 16th annual holiday craft fair and fish “chowdah” and chili luncheon, Saturday, Nov. 23, at the Harraseeket Grange on Elm Street. The fair runs from 9 a.m.-3 p.m., and the lunch is from 11 a.m.-2 p.m.
Among the items featured at the fair are homemade knit goods, stained glass, canned goods, jewelry, fresh wreaths, whoopie pies and more. There will be hourly drawings and free coffee. For more information, call Cindi at 865-3555 or Martha at 865-6188.
FHS seniors silent auction under way
The Freeport High School senior class is holding an online silent auction through Dec. 6 to raise funds for their Project Graduation in June 2014. Families, local businesses and individual students have contributed items such as a week at a vacation home in Nicaragua, an afternoon of sailing on the Harraseeket River, babysitting around the holidays, and four hours of yard work performed by members of the class.
All of the budget for Project Graduation is earned by senior class members, with assistance from their parents. Project Graduation is designed to help graduating seniors stay off the roads and stay safe after they receive their diplomas. To place bids, go to www.fhsprojectgraduation2014.com. Coat collection needs volunteers
Merrymeeting Bay Triad is looking for volunteers to help Nov. 22-24 with staffing the collection site for their Coats for Seniors collection drive at L.L. Bean. They are partnering with Maine Area Agencies on Aging and L.L. Bean to collect and distribute coats to Maine seniors in need.

Art Guild holding sale Nov. 23
The Art Guild of Freeport is holding a fine arts and crafts sale and silent auction at the Freeport Community Services Center, 53 Depot St., on Saturday, Nov. 23, from 10 a.m.- 5 p.m. The silent auction, from 10 a.m.-3:30 p.m., will include pieces of art and fine craft donated by art guild members.
Mystery writer to speak
Maine mystery writer Kieran Shields will talk and sign books on Monday, Dec, 2, at 6:30 p.m., at the Freeport Community Library.
Shields grew up in Portland. His first novel, “The Truth of All Things,” was published by Crown in 2012. This was followed by the sequel, “A Study in Revenge” in January 2013. His crime series is set in Portland during the late 1800s. Copies of both books will be available for purchase and signing, and light refreshments will be served.
