Veterans Day is approaching. This is a time set aside to honor all military personnel, past and present. Show your support and respect by attending the annual Veterans Day Ceremony at the Windham Veterans Center on Monday, Nov. 11, at 11 a.m. Visit the Memorial Garden and enjoy the music provided by our local youth, partake of refreshments and honor our military.

A Reminder for Students

Check with your guidance office about the opportunity to compete for VFW scholarships. The deadline is Nov. 1 and the requirements are to write a short essay on the selected patriotic topic. You can also call 892-6582 for more information.

Citizenship Educators

Since 1999, the Veterans of Foreign Wars has recognized classroom teachers for promoting citizenship education. Three teachers from each level (grades K-5, 6-8 and 9-12 are selected as national winners and they each receive $1,000 and their school receives a $1,000 award. Nov. 1 is the deadline for teacher nominations to the local VFW Post 10643. Anyone may nominate a teacher except for teacher or one of his/her relatives. Medicare and More

On Tuesdays, Nov. 5 and 19, the Southern Maine Agency on Aging (SMAA) will offer a Medicare seminar for the Lakes Region at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church at 919 Roosevelt Trail, Windham. A “Welcome to Medicare” seminar is scheduled from 10 a.m.-noon. In addition to the Medicare seminar, there will be one-on-one counseling with volunteer Medicare advocates available from 9 a.m.-noon each Tuesday from Oct. 15 through Dec. 7, Medicare’s open enrollment period. In addition to Medicare assistance, counseling on tax and rent rebate, food stamps, and fuel assistance can be arranged. Call the Southern Maine Agency on Aging to register for the upcoming seminars or to make one-on-one appointments with Medicare Advocates at 396-6500 or 1-800-427-7411. Seminar walk-ins can usually be accommodated. Further opportunities for these services will continue at the same times and location on the first and third Tuesdays of the month in 2014. Bean Supper

On Saturday, Oct. 26, the veterans of VFW Post 10643 and Field-Allen Post 148 American Legion will hold an old-fashioned bean supper at the Windham Veterans Center. Proceeds will benefit the Veterans Helping Veterans Fund. The supper will be preceded at 4:30 p.m. with a ceremony to recognize local businesses and individuals for their support over the past year. The supper will follow, from 5-6:30 p.m. Adults are $8, children under 12 are free. For more information contact Dave at 892-1306.

Windham Cancer Support Group

Psychic Barbara Balkin will address the next Windham Cancer Support Group at its Monday, Oct. 28, meeting at Windham Public Library. She will discuss how she changed her high-pressure job to providing healing messages to clients who are survivors of various traumas and learn how to circumvent different physical and emotional stresses in life. The meeting is from 6:30-8 p.m.

Theater Production

“Children of Eden” will be presented by Windham Center Stage Theater at town hall on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 1-2 and Nov. 8-10. Tickets are $10 and $12. For more information, email wcsttickets@gmail.com or call 893-2098.

Thanksgiving Baskets

The Windham Food Pantry is providing Thanksgiving baskets to more than 200 Windham residents in need. Donations of cash or food (turkeys needed!) are being accepted at the Family Resource Center and Town Hall, Monday-Thursday from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. The Windham Clothes Closet continues to be open Mondays and Tuesdays 10 a.m.-noon. Clean and gently used winter clothing is always welcome.

Military Benefits

On Wednesday, Nov. 13, Jerry Smith from the Veterans Administration in Lewiston will be at Windham Veterans Center from 9 a.m.-noon to assist veterans and dependents about vet benefits. He is covering the VSO position until a permanent replacement for Phyllis D’Orsay can be found, sometime in the spring. You can reach him at 783-5306, but you do not need an appointment to visit him at the Windham Vets Center.

Senior Center

The public is invited to a free lunch on Monday, Oct. 28, at the Lakes Region Senior Center, Sunset Ridge Golf Links, River Road near the Westbrook line. At 11 a.m., In-Home Senior Services will host a luncheon of beef stew, mac and cheese, rolls, beverage and dessert. Call Marge at 892-4955 by Tuesday, Oct. 22, if you plan to attend to assure ample supply of food. The center is open at 9 a.m. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday. Book Group

Windham Public Library Book Group meets on Tuesday, Oct. 29, at 6:15 p.m. in the public meeting room. This month’s selection is anything by, or about, Ernest Hemingway. Call Barbara, 892-1908, if you have questions. All are welcome, whether or not they’re a patron of the library.

Teens at the Library

The TNT Club (‘Tweens-n-Teens) for grades 6-12 will start up again at the library on Nov. 7. This is a free, monthly after-school program held at the library. More information is available at http://www.windham.lib.me.us/teens.

Christmas Fair

Windham Historical Society will hold its annual Old Fashioned Christmas Fair from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 9-10, at the Society’s headquarters, 234 Windham Center Road. Handmade gifts, decorations, wreaths, unique tree ornaments, sweet treats, linens and much more from yesteryear.

Holiday Fair

A holiday fair will be held on Saturday, Nov. 9, 9 a.m.-3 p.m., with luncheon at Windham Hill UCC Fellowship Hall, 140 Windham Center Road. Wreaths, cemetery baskets, baked goods, jewelry, decorations, silent auction, pies to order, crafts.

Christmas Fair

A “Made in Maine” Christmas Fair will be held on Dec. 7 and 8 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, Roosevelt Trail. Hours are 8 a.m.-3 p.m. Dec. 8 and 11:30 a.m.-1:20 p.m. on Dec. 8. Gift baskets, baked goods, raffles for museum visits, restaurants, spas, theater, vintage quilt and a furnished dollhouse. Breakfast and lunch available; homemade food to go.

Chamber Singers In Concert Dec. 7
