WESTBROOK – Westbrook’s Ward 2 will see a race for the City Council seat between incumbent Victor Chau, a Democrat who has served on the council since 2010, and Matt Maloney, the Republican opponent. They were both asked to answer the same questions about their candidacy. These are the responses:
Matt Maloney (R)
Age: 37
Occupation: Warehouse manager (Wayside Soup Kitchen) and audio engineer (Space Gallery)
Political experience: Citizen activist
Q: What do you see as the three biggest issues facing the City Council and how would you resolve them?
A: Westbrook is still unfriendly to small business. I will work to reduce small business regulations, because those investing in our community and creating jobs shouldn’t be burdened with high taxes and red tape.
I’m concerned about endless “investing” promises. The council is too quick to just rubber stamp or throws good taxpayer money at new infrastructure projects claiming to be “investing” in our future. We should instead seek to repair or maintain our current structures until our current economic situation recovers.
Transparency will be a top priority for me on the council. The council’s agenda should be posted two full weeks before meetings to ensure all citizens can become informed on important topics.
Q: Why do you want to serve on the City Council?
A: I believe that the council needs a fresh perspective. I am not afraid to ask questions. I have become uneasy with the increased militarization of our police force, the many vacant homes and businesses in our downtown, the ever-growing tax burden, and our loss of civil liberties. I view localism and volunteerism as key to a successful and healthy community.
Victor Chau (D)
Age: 39
Occupation: Real estate broker
Political experience: City councilor since 2010
Q: What do you see as the three biggest issues facing the City Council and how would you resolve them?
A: The biggest issues currently are to ensure the momentum that Mayor Hilton and the City Council have built carries forward. We are working hard on a number of issues, which will have a positive impact on all Westbrook residents when they are completed.
Q: Why do you want to serve on the City Council?
A: I want to improve our city for all local residents and businesses by listening to their concerns and serving them as their representative. I am committed to serving our great city to the best of my ability by doing my homework, researching the issues and arriving at a fair and balanced solution.
