The Pownal Town Office will be closed on Monday, Oct. 14, for Columbus Day.
Meetings
Pownal selectmen will meet Monday, Oct. 21, at 7 p.m., at Mallett Hall.
The Solid Waste Committee will meet Monday, Oct. 14, at 6 p.m., at Mallett Hall.
The Pownal Planning Board agenda for its meeting Wednesday, Oct. 16, includes: New Business: Spatial Alternatives zoning map, John Schwanda of Owen Haskell Inc. The meeting will be at Mallett Hall at 7 p.m.
The Planning Board will hold an ongoing review of Ordinances: Subdivision Ordinance, Tuesday, Oct. 22, from 8-9:30 a.m., at Mallett Hall, Old Selectmen’s Office. All Planning Board meetings, on-site inspections and workshops are open to the public.
CEO office hours changing
Effective Oct. 10, the Code Enforcement Office hours will be changing to Thursdays from 5:30- 7 p.m. As always, the code officer, Barbara Skelton, can be reached by email at ceo@pownalmaine.org. The office will be open Thursday, Oct. 10, from 5:30-7 p.m., and every Thursday evening from 5:30-7 from that point on.
Kids Krusade Oct. 20
The First Parish Congregational Church, Hallowell Road in Pownal, will hold a Kids Krusade on Sunday, Oct. 20, from 9:30 a.m.-noon. There will be Bible stories, games, crafts, snacks and prizes. All children are welcome. For transportation or for more information, call 688-4846 or 688-4791.
Fire & Rescue hosting open house
The members of the Pownal Fire & Rescue Department are hosting an open house on Saturday, Oct. 12, from 11 a.m.- 2 p.m., at the Pownal Center Station. Those who attend can meet the members of the department and the members of the fire company who help to support them. The trucks and other equipment will be on display. Hot dogs, ice cream and drinks will be served while they last.
Dams and the Royal River
The Royal River Conservation Trust, Maine Rivers and the town of Yarmouth are hosting a public informational session on recent studies regarding the future of two dams on the Royal River owned by the town of Yarmouth, Tuesday, Oct. 22, from 7-9 p.m., at the Log Cabin, 196 Main St., Yarmouth.
Fisheries and ecological implications extend upriver along the Royal and its tributaries to Pownal, Freeport, North Yarmouth, New Gloucester, Gray and Auburn. Paddling implications extend upriver to North Yarmouth. The informational session comes in advance of an expected public hearing in front of the Yarmouth Town Council in November or December inviting public input on whether to move forward with the removal of one or both dams. Harvest supper on Saturday
The North Pownal United Methodist Church, 851 Lawrence Road, will be holding a public Harvest Supper on Saturday, Oct. 12, from 4:30-6 p.m. Tickets are adults $8; children 4-12 years old, $4 (note price corrections); and 3 years and under no charge. Church cooking beans, spaghetti
On Saturday, Oct. 19, the First Parish Congregational Church 422 Hallowell Road, Pownal, will be hosting a baked beans and spaghetti supper. There are settings at 5 and 6 p.m. Tickets are adults $8, children 5-12 $4, and children under 5 eat free. To reserve tickets, call Lois at 688-4433.
Returnables sought to support fire-rescue
The Pownal Fire Co. works to support the Pownal Fire & Rescue Department. In addition to providing food during fires and trainings, the organization purchases work uniforms and equipment for the town’s emergency personnel. The money the fire company is able to donate toward these items helps to keep the fire department’s expenses down. The organization seeks donations of returnable bottles and cans to help fund its work. The Pownal Fire Co. is independent from the town of Pownal and the Pownal Fire and Rescue Department. The bottle building is located behind the town hall.
Men’s breakfast
The Men’s Breakfast at the First Parish Congregational Church of Pownal, 422 Hallowell Road, is held the first Saturday of each month at 7:30 a.m. at the church. It is open to any men who want to come. They do not have to be affiliated with the church. The Rev. John Wentworth leads the discussions.
Food pantry on Tuesdays
The North Pownal United Methodist Church food Pantry on 851 Lawrence Road is open every Tuesday from 10:30 a.m.-noon. Organizers never know from week to week what they will be getting, though there usually are different kinds of breads, produce, desserts, etc. All are welcome.
