When Zackary Wescott tees off this weekend, he won’t be playing just another nine holes – he will be playing for a greater cause.

Wescott, a 17-year-old senior at Westbrook High School, helped organize Twin Falls Golf Club’s fifth annual “Gamekeepers Revenge” on Saturday, Oct. 8, starting at 8 a.m. The event is a golf scramble to help raise money to send Wescott to Nicaragua, where he plans to spend a week helping people in need.

“I want to help other people who can’t afford the help they need,” he said. “It makes me feel good as a person to help others less fortunate.”

Saturday’s scramble already has 40 people signed up for the $50 buy-in, which will cover the $1,500 cost of sending Wescott in March to Ometepe Island in Nicaragua with ADios Ministries. Wescott said he will donate the rest of the money raised to an orphanage in Nicaragua.

Wescott said he got the idea to go on a mission trip with ADios after hearing about the Portland organization from another golfer who had helped organize the golf scramble at Wescott’s grandparents’ course, Twin Falls, in the past.

“I was told about it a few years ago, but I felt this year was the time to do it,” Wescott said.

Clinton Boullie, Wescott’s grandfather, who runs the course, said at first they were willing to pay for Wescott to go on the mission trip, but decided instead to let him raise the money himself.

“He’s been involved in Seeds of Peace and Big Brother Big Sister in Westbrook,” Boullie said. “Hopefully he’ll continue that. He’s drawn an interest in that. We were just going to send him, and then it was like, ‘Let’s let him earn it.’ “

The scramble adds some “spice” to the course, Boullie said, adding small holes and big holes to the greens and even one without a flag.

Winners will earn gift certificates to local businesses, including Profenno’s, Chinaville and Sea Dog Brewing. After the scramble, lunch will be served.

To sign up, call the golf course at 854-5397.
