The Scarborough Economic Development Corporation has named four local recipients of its 2013 Outstanding Business Awards, to be handed out at the group’s 28th annual meeting, to be held Oct. 8 at the Black Point Inn.

Honored this year are: Horizon Solutions for “Project of the Year;” Ron Forest & Sons Fence Company as “Outstanding Legacy Business;” Scarborough Grounds as “Outstanding Small Business;” and Project G.R.A.C.E. for “Outstanding Contribution to the Community.”

“The companies receiving awards this year go beyond running great businesses,” said SEDCO Executive Director Karen Martin. “They’ve become part of the Scarborough landscape and have made Scarborough a better community.”

Stuart Axelrod, chairman of SEDCO’s board of directors, noted that the selection of all four honorees was unanimous. There also will be an additional award this year, named in honor of Harvey Rosenfeld, who retired in March after 24 years at SEDCO’s helm.

That award, given for “outstanding contribution to the community by an individual,” will celebrate its namesake as its first honoree, said Axelrod.

“We wanted to establish this award for individual contribution and honor Harvey as its first recipient,” said Axelrod.

Sponsors for this year’s annual meeting include Allied Cook Construction, Biddeford Savings Bank, Enterprise Business Park, Gawron Turgeon Architects, Lamey Wellehan, Pine Tree Waste and Saco & Biddeford Savings. The keynote speaker will be Seth Goodall, New England administrator for the U.S. Small Business Administration.

“Entrepreneurship drives the economy,” said Martin. “As we market the region nationally and internationally, the ability to interest entrepreneurs in all types of industries is critical to our future. The Small Business Administration and, in particular, Mr. Goodall, understands the needs of today’s entrepreneur.”
