WOOLWICH — Whether one is looking for a church that appreciates good music and loves to sing, or one wants to find a choir in which to raise a voice in praise and thanksgiving, Pastor Alan Baughcum says Day’s Ferry is the place to be.

The choir has recently doubled in size and looks forward to welcoming additional voices to its company.

In the last nine months there has been a remarkable rebirth of music at the small Day’s Ferry Congregational Church in Woolwich. First to arrive was Paul Althouse, the church’s new director of music. Althouse served as professor of music at Connecticut College for more than four decades prior to his retirement. He was also music director of Niantic Community Church in Niantic, Conn., for three decades before coming to Day’s Ferry in December 2012.

Althouse received his bachelor’s degree in music from Harvard University and his doctorate in music history from Yale University. In addition to directing choral groups and making music on various instruments, Althouse loves to write. He has been a longtime reviewer of classical music recordings for the American Record Guide, Opus, Stereophile, and Schwann.

Nearly simultaneous with Althouse’s arrival, the church was presented with the gift of a Yamaha grand piano, in memory of a recently deceased member of the church, Doris Nuesse. This fine instrument, which is suitable for recital or concert use, was much lauded after the Bowdoin International Music Festival program held at the church in July.

Last Sunday the congregation endorsed a decision by the church’s trustees to purchase a new Rodgers electronic organ. The church’s existing reed organ, installed in 1877, was the first organ east of the Kennebec River. It is still in use and much appreciated. Still, the flexibility of the new organ will allow for effective presentation of music from all historical periods and enlarge the repertory of music heard each week.

Day’s Ferry’s congregation worships in a lovely and traditional congregational sanctuary, built in 1833. The sun streams into the many windows of the worship space and the sound of hymns, choral anthems, piano, organ and steeple bell completely fill the air.

Anyone interest in finding out more about worship and music, ministry and mission, at Day’s Ferry Congregational Church, should contact Althouse at 389-4312; or come to worship Sunday mornings at 10 a.m.

The church is located at 50 Old Stage Road, between Routes 127 and 128 in Woolwich. Follow the signs or get directions from the church’s website, www.daysferrycongregational.org/.
