Well Done, Part I Former City Councilor Maxine Beecher, honored in June by the Maine Association of Planners with its Citizen Planner of the Year Award, has been recognized again. At its annual conference Sept. 19 in Meredith, N.H., the Northern New England Chapter of the American Planning Association also named Beecher its 2013 Citizen Planner of the Year. Beecher was recognized for her work shepherding South Portland’s new comprehensive plan to state acceptance earlier this year, and for chairing three committees since 2007 that developed what the state planning association called “innovative ordinances on stormwater management and infill development on small lots of record.”

Well Done, Part II The Alliance of Community Media Northeast Region has named Tony Vigue, station manager of South Portland Community Television, the 2013 recipient of its Chuck Sherwood Leadership Award.

“This award recognizes an individual whose commitment, experience and accomplishments have made a significant contribution through their service,” said City Manager Jim Gailey, when announcing the award at the Sept. 16 City Council meeting. “It also recognizes individuals for going above and beyond the call of service to support the preservation and growth of community media.” Vigue will be honored at the alliances’ regional fall conference and trade show Oct. 10-11 in Sturbridge, Mass.

Well Done, Part III South Portland has received a Certificate of Excellence in Financial Reporting from the Government Finance Office Association of the United States and Canada.

“This certificate of achievement is the highest form of recognition in the area of governmental accounting and financial reporting, and its attainment represents a significant accomplishment,” said City Manager Jim Gailey. “I’d just like to pass on congratulations to our finance director Greg L’Heureux and his staff. They do an excellent job keeping the finances of this city in check and balanced at the end of every fiscal year.”
