The annual Sandsations Sand Sculpting contest took place last Saturday at Pine Point Beach, bringing teams of sand-shapers and spectators together on a beautiful late summer day to raise money for Birth Roots Perinatal Resource Center, a Portland-based nonprofit organization that provides support and resources to families with new babies.

Not just black rocks, but washed and shiny black rocks were necessary to complete a sand sculpture by Johanna Hill, right, of Portland and Sarah-Jane Wing of Topsham.Steve Nelson, of Saco, carved a mouth-watering specimen from the Pine Point sand.Amos Goss of Portland gets help from his son, Oscar, in foreground, and Joshua MacLaughlin of Windham as they populate a sculpted sand shark’s mouth with multiple rows of shell teeth. There were a few lobstermen in the contest.
