To increase public awareness about how to prevent and reduce falls among older adults, the Medically Oriented Gym in South Portland and University of New England are partnering with some local experts in senior care to offer free fall risk screenings, education and resources on Monday, Sept. 23.
One in three people over the age of 65 falls each year, and this number increases to one in two by the age of 80. Fall-related injuries can result in hospitalization and sometimes death, and individuals who fall (or are simply afraid of falling) often face significant declines in mobility and independence.
Many falls can be prevented. By knowing your risks and making some changes, you can lower your chances of falling.
Join in at the Medically Oriented Gym at 29 Foden Road in South Portland on Sept. 23 from 1-4 p.m. as part of the sixth annual National Falls Prevention Awareness Day. The free event will include: Fall risk screenings, education on what you can do if you are at a high risk for falling, information from local resources, giveaways and raffles, refreshments.
