South Portland artist Ruth Gorton will be showing her paintings at People’s United Bank, 188 Route 1, Falmouth, throughout the month of September. The paintings are available to purchase, with 50 percent of the proceeds being donated in the buyer’s name to the Preble Street Resource Center in Portland. The mission of Preble Street is to provide accessible barrier-free services to empower people experiencing problems with homelessness, housing, hunger, and poverty, and to advocate for solutions to these problems. In 2007, Gorton began a “Daily Painting” project creating a painting each day. These works are smaller pieces, taken from the Daily Painting collection. The Portland International Jetport’s Noise Abatement Program will be hosting a community meeting at 6:30 p.m. at the Redbank Community Center, located on MacArthur Circle in South Portland. Jetport staff will present information about their ongoing efforts to reduce the impact of airport/aircraft noise on South Portland neighborhoods. The Cape Elizabeth United Methodist Church will host a public supper from 4:30-6 p.m., featuring foods with locally grown produce and ingredients. This is the church’s first public supper of the season and its annual heirloom supper. Suppers feature casseroles, beans, salads, breads and pies for dessert. The charge will be $8 for adults, $5 for children and $20 for families (2 adults and children). Take-out will be available. The church is located at 280 Ocean House Road.
From 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m., take part in a Sparrow Migration Bird Walk, at Scarborough Land Trust’s Broadturn Farm property. The Cape Elizabeth United Methodist Church will host its annual Blessing of the Animals at 1 p.m. in the outdoor chapel. The church conducts this blessing to honor the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi, patron saint of animals and the environment. All animals are welcome. In the past, the blessing focused on just dogs, but beginning last year all animals were invited and 30 dogs, one cat and one rabbit were blessed. The path to the outdoor chapel is at the far end of the church parking lot. The church is located at 280 Ocean House Road. The public is invited to attend.

Food Addicts in Recovery Anonymous (FA) is offering a free information session on at St. Maximillian Church, 150 Black Point Road, Scarborough, from 9-10:30 a.m. for anyone in the community who may be suffering from overeating, food obsession, under-eating, or bulimia. Everyone is welcome, including those who are concerned about someone who may be suffering. FA is a nonprofit Twelve Step fellowship based on the principles of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA).
