SEARSPORT

Joe Plummer of Searsport is collecting old Tonka trucks to give to children to restore for his Tonka Truck Restoration Project. Children who have Tonka trucks in need of restoration also may join the project.

Searsport Motor Company and Searsport Automotive and Tires will donate time and materials to hold repair workshops. The restored trucks will be displayed Saturday, Oct. 12, in Mosman Park at Searsport’s annual Fling Into Fall celebration. Trophies and prizes will be awarded by age group for best restoration. Adults may participate, but prizes and trophies will be awarded only to children.

“I thought that kids would have fun working on these trucks,” Plummer said, “and if they bring them to the folks at Searsport Automotive or Tires or Searsport Motor Company, they will get to work with professionals. Kids don’t often have a chance to do that.”

Sign up for the event by calling Plummer at 548-2834.

The Tonka Truck repair workshops will be held 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Sept. 28, at Searsport Motor Co., 315 East Main St.; and 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Oct. 5, at Searsport Automotive and Tires, 357 West Main St.

These workshops will provide free professional help with fixing broken parts, straightening out bent parts or sand blasting the trucks so they can be primed and painted.

The Tonka Truck Restoration Project is part of Searsport’s annual autumn celebration Fling Into Fall, to be held Friday and Saturday, Oct. 11-12.

The event will feature a parade, music, an antique car show, a craft show, food, a scarecrow contest, face painting, pumpkin carving, an art exhibit and more. The parade will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday; the antique car show will begin at 11:30 a.m. at Mosman Park. Tonka Trucks will be on display during the car show and judging, at 2:30 p.m.
