BRUNSWICK — More than 300 works by 150 artists from all over Maine, from Portland to Searsport and from Buxton to Bailey Island, will be on exhibit and for sale in the 10×10 Benefit Art Exhibit & Sale, 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 27 at the Morrell Meeting Room, Curtis Memorial Library; and the Parish Hall, St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, which have been centerpieces of community support in Brunswick for many years.

The 10×10 Exhibit has been enthusiastically supported by artists, art collectors and community volunteers since 2007, when friends and fellow Brunswick artists Lucy Cooney, Catherine Worthington and Judith Long came up with the idea of a 10×10 Exhibition to benefit Arts Are Elementary.

Hundreds of collectors attend the exhibit and community volunteers contribute in a variety of creative ways.

Businesses offer financial sponsorship to offset the costs of frames and publicity. Restaurants provide appetizers for the reception. Points of View artists help in framing artwork. Spindleworks artists hang posters. Bowdoin College women’s hockey team prepares the frames and washes glass.

Brunswick High School students serve at the reception and another 50 community volunteers work at the dropoff, the reception, pickup and cleanup.

Proceeds benefit Arts Are Elementary, a nonprofit program founded in 1980 by parents, teachers and artists that has brought visual artists, writers and performers into the Brunswick elementary schools, reaching all children in kindergarten through fifth grade with fun, inspiring models and a myriad of wonderful opportunities for creative expression.

To date, the 10×10 Exhibit has raised more than $50,000. Last year the exhibit yielded over $14,000.

“Simply put, Arts Are Elementary could not do what we do without the generous support of our community through fundraisers such as our annual 10×10 Art Exhibit and Sale,” said Arts Are Elementary Executive Director Kristi Hatrick.

Joe Godleski’s “Maritime Workshop” was selected in a competition to represent the 10×10 exhibition.
