WESTBROOK – Westbrook is hoping to sell some of the nearly 90 properties it owns, producing more tax revenue.

Jerre Bryant, city administrator, said he believes there are currently only three lots for sale from the city-owned property list: Prides Corner Elementary School, a lot next to the City Hall at 2 York St., and a 2.8-acre, tree-filled parcel on Cumberland Street (tax map 11, lot 8).

“The assessors produced a list and we’re going through which sites are buildable lots and get them sold to get people to move in to Westbrook,” said Bill Baker, Westbrook’s assistant city administrator for business and community relations.

The list includes parcels ranging from as small as .018 acres on Myrtle Street to as big as 75 acres on Bridge Street. Methodist Road has the most lots for sale with nine open parcels; Spring Street comes in second with six. Not all the lots are can be built on because of land gradients, water sources and other construction limitations and most the lots on the list are not for sale.

The old Prides Corner Elementary School is described in the assessor’s database as a 30,000-square-foot brick and masonry building on 9 acres with an assessed value of $2.2 million, zoned Residential Growth Area 2. City Hall is described as a 16,000-square-foot brick and masonry building on 4.68 acres. It has an assessed value of $1.9 million, and is zoned Gateway Commercial.

Baker said many of the properties came into the hands of the city after residents had defaulted on their taxes.

The city is soliciting bids for the 2.8-acre Cumberland Street property, located near the Windham line. They are due no later than Thursday, Sept. 19, with an opening scheduled for 3:30 p.m. Bids must be delivered or mailed to City Hall. The minimum bid for the property is $51,300, and a 10 percent bid deposit is needed when the bids are dropped off at City Hall.

The city of Westbrook is attempting to sell off some of its property, including parcels like the City Hall building at 2 York St., and the old Prides Corner Elementary School.
