President Barack Obama will appoint Michael R. Petit, to the Commission to Eliminate Child Abuse and Neglect Fatalities.
The commission, which was established by the “Protect Our Kids Act” (H.R. 6655), is charged with developing a national strategy and recommendations for reducing fatalities resulting from child abuse and neglect. Obama selected Petit to be one of the six commissioners he has the authority to appoint to the new commission.
“For more than four decades, Michael Petit has committed himself to improving the welfare and wellbeing of our nation’s children and families,” said U.S. Rep. Mike Michaud, who wrote a letter to Obama in support of Petit earlier this year. “Mr. Petit has become known as a national leader on child welfare and child protection issues, and his experience is a perfect match for this commission. I applaud the president’s appointment and know it will greatly benefit the mission of this important commission.”
Petit received a B.A. from Bowdoin College and an M.S.W. from Boston College.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
