• The Cumberland County Republican Committee is hosting a benefit Trap Shoot at Scarborough Fish & Game Association, 21 Fish & Game Lane, Scarborough. Check-in is at 8 a.m. Shooting is 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Lunch is noon-2 p.m. Entry is $65 before Sept. 1 and $75 after Aug. 31. Prizes awarded. • The Robbie Foundation, based in Scarborough, will hold its first annual 5K race, 1.5-mile walk and kids fun run in Back Cove in Portland. Registration starts at 6:45 a.m. with the race and walk starting at 8:30 a.m. There will be awards for a variety of categories including first male and female overall. All proceeds will go to provide adaptive equipment, therapy treatments and other services, that are not covered by insurance, for children and youth with developmental disabilities in Maine. • South Portland Public Works Open House takes place 9 a.m.-noon at the 42 O’Neil St. location in South Portland. The city welcomes all residents to the current facility. Staff will be on hand to answer any questions. Tours are available. Light refreshments will be served. There will be document shredding by Without a Trace, Electronic Waste Collection and the South Portland Police Department will do a child safety seat check.
Sunday, Sept. 15
• The Quest for the Best Second Annual Pie/Cupcake Contest to benefit the March of Dimes will be held at Kitchen & Cork in Cabela’s Plaza in Scarborough. Anyone 16 or older can enter the pie-baking contest, which is co-sponsored by King Arthur Flour, and anyone 9 or older can enter the cupcake-baking contest. However, if you want to eat pie, they need you, too. After the judging, all of the homemade pies are available for sale, either by the slice or whole. Pies/cupcakes can be dropped off under the tent outside of Kitchen & Cork between 9-11 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 15. In case of inclement weather, the event will be held indoors beside Kitchen & Cork. Seniors’ Lunch Out and Bingo fun, a catered lunch sponsored by Southern Maine Agency on Aging and held at Blue Point Congregational Church, 236 Pine Point Road, Scarborough, at noon. Ossewantha Garden Club, of South Portland, will meet at 1 p.m. at the South Portland Community Center Nelson Road. The business meeting will be followed by a program presented by Cindy Carroll from O’Donal’s Nurseries in Gorham, who will speak on how and when to divide perennials. The public is welcome.
Thursday, Sept. 19
• The Portland International Jetport’s Noise Abatement Program will be hosting a community meeting at 6:30 p.m. at the Redbank Community Center, located on MacArthur Circle in South Portland. Jetport staff will present information about their ongoing efforts to reduce the impact of airport/aircraft noise on South Portland neighborhoods. Residents who have questions or concerns about airport/aircraft noise, or who wish to learn more about the Jetport, are invited to attend. • After a break to enjoy the summer and their gardens, the Scarborough Garden Club is resuming its monthly meetings at 12:30 p.m. at The Hillcrest Community Center, 108 Hillcrest Ave. The meeting will be an informal gathering where current members, guests, and prospective members can enjoy fellowship and hear their past president Elaine Toher tell about the club’s history, activities and current projects.
