The Raymond-Casco Historical Society will host a presentation by Raymond resident John Manoush, who will explore “Daily Life in the Early 1800s” starting at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 9, at the society’s museum on Route 302 in Casco.

As a trustee of the Hawthorne Community Association for the last 11 years, Manoush has studied what author Nathaniel Hawthorne’s early life was like when he lived in Raymond between about 1812 and 1825. The fact that Hawthorne’s home is still standing after 200 years attests to the fame of its former resident, but what about the average working person back then? What were their homes and lives like?

Picking up from where he left off at last year’s presentation, Manoush will be continuing on to other aspects of life in the early 19th century. Consulting a number of sources including books of the late Ernest Knight of Raymond, a founding member of the Raymond-Casco Historical Society, Manoush has attempted to construct a picture of what everyday life was like in the following areas: eating, drinking, smoking, shopping, entertainment and travel.

All are welcome and there is no charge to attend. For more information, check out www.raymondcascohistory.org or call Pam Grant at 655-2438.
