Library Closed Fridays

The Windham Public Library will be closed all day on Fridays, temporarily, beginning Sept. 6 while the search for a library director goes on. Notification will be made when normal hours are resumed.

Storyteller McDonald

On Saturday, Sept. 7, Maine storyteller and writer John McDonald will appear at 7 p.m. at Windham Hill United Church of Christ, 140 Windham Center Road. After his performance he will stay to autograph books that will be available on site and to talk with the audience. Tickets are available at the door, $12 for adults, $10 for children and seniors. Audition Notice

Windham Center Stage Theater will hold auditions for Children of Eden on Friday, Sept. 6, at 6 p.m. and Saturday, Sept. 7, at 11 a.m. Auditions will be held at the town hall. Democrats Caucus

On Monday, Sept. 9, at 7 p.m., the Windham Democratic Town Committee will hold its municipal caucus to nominate candidates for the Nov. 5 ballot for Town Council, districts North, South and At-Large; RSU 14 School Board, two seats; and Town Clerk. VFW Meets

Windham Veterans of Foreign Wars will meet on Wednesday, Sept. 11, at 6 p.m. at the Windham Veterans Center, North Windham. Social hour will be at 5 p.m.

Help for Vets

On Wednesday, Sept. 11, Veterans Service Officer Phyllis D’Orsay is available at the Windham Veterans Center, as she is on the second and fourth Wednesdays every month, from 9 a.m. until noon. She assists veterans, widows of veterans and dependents with questions about benefits and other information. If you have questions of a military nature, stop in and get some answers. No appointment is needed. The Veterans Center is in North Windham, off Route 302, in back of the Windham Mall. Watch for signs.

Barbershop Music

On Saturday, Sept. 14, Music with a Mission will present the Downeasters Chorus, barbershop harmony including Flashpoint, a women’s Barbershop group at 7 p.m. at the North Windham Union Church. This is a benefit for community organizations including Windham Neighbors Helping Neighbors. Tickets are $12 adults, $10 students, children and seniors. Lobster Dinner

On Saturday, Sept. 14, the Knights of Columbus Council 10020 will hold a lobster dinner at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church on Roosevelt Trail from 5-6 p.m. Tickets are $15 per person and include a lobster, corn on the cob, salads, rolls, beverage and desserts. Option: Two hamburgers or cheeseburgers instead of lobster, $9 per person. Get $3 cash back at the door if you bring something for the food pantry. Manchester School Reunion

Windham’s Manchester School is 40 years old and a reunion is being planned by Bill Diamond, the first principal of the school, and a group of teachers. Bill tells us the school was originally called Windham Elementary School and was one of the first open-concept schools in the state. If there are any teachers and staff who were there in September 1973 at the beginning, please contact Bill at 892-8941 or by email, diamondhollyd@aol.com. The reunion group will meet at the school at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 14, for a tour of the school and lunch.

Windham Auto Show

On Sunday, Sept. 15, Windham/Raymond Athletic Boosters will hold the Windham Auto Show at Windham Mall (behind Hannaford) in North Windham, Route 302. Show cars entry, 7-11 a.m.; judging 11 a.m.; spectators from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Admission for show cars is a $5 donation; adults $5, seniors/students $3; children 5 and under, free. This will take place rain or shine.

Medicare Information

On Tuesday, Sept. 17, the Southern Maine Agency on Aging (SMAA) will offer a Medicare seminar and counseling session for the Lakes Region at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church at 919 Roosevelt Trail, Windham. In addition to the Medicare seminar, there will be one-on-one counseling with volunteer Medicare advocates available from 9 a.m.-noon. The seminar and counseling are intended to help you sort through your Medicare options, answer questions – and to help you enroll. In addition to Medicare assistance, counseling on tax and rent rebate, food stamps, and fuel assistance can be arranged. Call SMAA to register for an upcoming seminar or to make a one-on-one appointment with a Medicare Advocate at 396-6500 or 1-800-427-7411. Seminar walk-ins can usually be accommodated. Further opportunities for these services will occur monthly on the first and third Tuesdays at the same times and location. Roast Beef Supper

On Saturday, Sept. 28, Windham Hill UCC will hold a public roast beef dinner with the entire fixin’s, from 5-6:30 p.m. Adults $8, children under 12, $5. The church is at 140 Windham Center Road.

Shred Your Documents

Windham Raymond School Age Child Care will join with Without a Trace on Saturday, Sept. 21, from 8 a.m.-noon at the Home Depot parking lot. Bring your personal documents to be shredded at an average cost of $5 per file box. Lower rates for more. This is a fundraiser for the Windham/Raymond SACC. Pig Roast

American Legion Post 148 will hold their 4th Annual Pig Roast on Sunday, Sept. 22, at the Windham Veterans Center. Horseshoes and other events are being planned for the afternoon prior to the dinner, which will be from 5-6:30 p.m. The event is open to the public at $10 per person or $30 for a family of four or more. This is a great opportunity for veterans to see the center and enjoy a day of camaraderie. The Vets Center is located on Military Drive, off Route 302 near Friendly’s; follow the road until you see the building.

Like Bingo?

Every Tuesday through Oct. 29, the Standish Memorial Post 128 American Legion holds Bingo at the Windham Veterans Center. Doors open at 4 p.m., Bingo at 6:30 p.m., refreshments available. WTA pull tabs. For more information, call 642-5583.

Jonathan Edwards Benefit Concert

On Friday, Oct 11, Music with a Mission will present a Jonathan Edwards concert at 7 p.m. at the North Windham Union Church. Tickets are $25 in advance, $30 at the door. Electronic Recycling

All towns can participate in the Electronic Recycling Day on Saturday, Oct. 12, from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. at the Windham Mall. Enter at Veterans Memorial Drive next to Friendly’s. The event is sponsored by Windham Hill UCC. Recycle TVs of all sizes, computer monitors, hard drives, laptops, printers, cell phones, cordless phones, VCR, DVDs, audio equipment, stereos, speakers, etc. No household appliances (stoves, refrigerators, microwaves) Donations accepted to cover cost of the event and to support the church’s missions.
