Making sure kids’ car seats are safe
The Maine Bureau of Highway Safety, in partnership with Freeport Public Safety, will be holding a free car-seat check on Sunday, Sept. 8, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m., at the Freeport Public Safety 16 Main St.
This is an opportunity for families to receive car-seat assistance from certified car-seat technicians. Families interested are asked to bring their children, car seats, and if possible, the vehicle manufacturer’s manual and car-seat instruction manual.
Statistics indicate that 4 out of 5 car seats are installed improperly. For more information, call the Maine child passenger safety coordinator at the Bureau of Highway Safety at 207-626-3840.
New hours, events at library
In response to patron requests, and after checking circulation statistics to determine which days and times were most popular, the Freeport Community Library has changed its hours, effective this week. The new hours and times were most popular. They are:
Monday and Wednesday, 10 a.m.-8 p.m.; Tuesday and Thursday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m.;
Friday, noon-5 p.m.; Saturday, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. (Saturday hours are not in effect Memorial Day through Labor Day).
Story Times will start at 10 a.m. on Tuesdays.
The Library Book Group’s September selection is “The Imperfectionists,” by Tom Rachman. The groups will meet Wednesday, Sep. 4, at 6 p.m. The group meets the first Wednesday of each month.
“Money in Politics: Democracy’s Crisis in Confidence,” is a multi-media presentation hosted by Maine Citizens for Clean Elections, scheduled for Monday, Sep. 16, at 6:30 p.m., in the library’s community room. The presentation will be followed by discussion with B.J. McCollister.

Members of the Freeport High School class of 1973 are planning a reunion for Oct. 5, and are trying to make contact with all classmates. ‘Indoor/Outdoor’ opens Sept. 12
The Freeport Players will present “Indoor/Outdoor,” by Kenny Finkle, a light comedy about an indoor cat who longs for the wild outdoors, Sept. 12-29 at the Freeport Performing Arts Center, 30 Holbrook St. Shows are Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m.

Nomination papers due Sept. 11
Nomination papers are available in the Town Clerk’s Office for residents interested in seeking the following Freeport offices: Councilor at large, one seat; District 1 councilor, one seat; RSU 5 board of directors, two seats; sewer district trustee, two seats; water district trustee, one seat.

West Street work ongoing
The West Street reconstruction project is progressing nicely, according to the town office. The base coat of pavement is down, and cleanup work, including curb work and driveway cuts, will continue through October. The final top coat of pavement will be applied next year.
Habitat work day scheduled
A work day for town councilors, employees, and volunteers to benefit Habitat for Humanity will take place on Saturday, Sept. 7. Anyone interested in signing up should contact Johnanna Hanselman at 865-4743, ext.120. Tasks are available for all ability levels.
Free camping this month
Winslow Park will offer more for free camping for Freeport residents, Sept. 16-22.
The campground closes for the season on Monday, Oct. 7. For more information, call 865-4198.
Weekend, Wednesday programs at Wolfe’s Neck park
Wolfe’s Neck Woods State Park will offer a variety of nature programs on weekends and Wednesdays at 2 p.m. through Sept. 29. Most programs start at the circle of benches at the end of the second parking lot unless otherwise noted, and may include walks, talks, and activities in a beautiful natural setting. Programs last about one hour, weather permitting.
No reservations are needed except for group use, and the nature programs are free with park admission. Admission is $1 for ages 5-11; $3 for Maine residents ages 12-64; $4.50 for non-residents ages 12-64; $1.50 for non-residents 65 and older. Those under 5 and Maine residents 65 and older are free.

New race benefits nonprofits
The Freeport, Pownal and Durham Education Foundation and Freeport Community Services will be the beneficiaries of the inaugural Freeport Half Marathon and 5K Road Races being held this Sunday. The organizer, 3C Race Productions, has agreed to donate a portion of all entry fees for both races to the local nonprofits.
“We’re very grateful to have been named by 3C Race Productions as a beneficiary of this event,” said Marie Gunning, president of the new Freeport, Pownal and Durham Education Foundation.
The group was created to support the students and teachers in the Regional School Unit 5 public schools. It writes grants and accepts targeted individual or corporate donations for specific projects or needs.
A group of local businesses have signed on as race sponsors for the Sept. 8 event, including Azure Cafe, Buck’s Naked BBQ & Steakhouse, Freeport USA, Freeport Veterinary Hospital, HDR Engineering, Norway Savings Bank, Petrillo’s Restaurant, and Wilbur’s of Maine.
Both the 5K and Half Marathon races will start and end near Petrillo’s Restaurant and FreeportUSA on Depot Street in downtown Freeport, and will take runners on a road course that includes field and coastal views.
