BIDDEFORD — The first live game action of head coach Brian Curit’s second tenure at Biddeford High School had lots of positives, as well as some negatives, according to Curit. The Tigers played both Morse and Greely in a three-team scrimmage at Waterhouse Field on Monday afternoon, the first time since preseason started last Monday that players got to go against someone in a different colored uniform.

Curit said there were some good things and some bad things that he saw from his team. The Tigers looked good against Morse ”“ the first team they played ”“ as new starting quarterback Casey Twomey hit Corey Brown for a 70-yard touchdown pass on their first offensive play.

The Tiger defense also looked good against the Class B Shipbuilders, as they didn’t allow a first down during the entire scrimmage. Curit said he was pleased ”“ but not satisfied ”“ with the effort of his defense. Sasha Kurlychek-Godard and Matt Stone were amongst the Biddeford defenders that stood out.

While Biddeford looked good against Morse ”“ Running back Corey Creeger had a 67-yard touchdown run and the second team offense moved the ball at will against the Shipbuilders’ backups ”“ the Tigers had a tougher time against Greely. The Rangers, another Class B opponent, put a licking on Morse when those two teams played, then showed no fear against the Class A Tigers.

Brown came up with an interception on Greely’s first offensive play, but the Rangers had some big gains against the Tigers’ starting defense, although many were called back on penalties. Greely scored twice on pass plays with its first-string offense on the field.

Biddeford’s offense had a tougher time against Greely’s defense, as it took the Tigers nine plays to get past the original line of scrimmage during its initial set of plays. The Tigers struggled to gain yards in bunches, but Brown did make a nice sideline catch on a halfback pass on fourth down that went for 48 yards. Biddeford got into the red zone, but a pass to Kurlychek-Godard in the end zone from Twomey fell incomplete on fourth down.

Curit said his team didn’t play well up front on offense, as Greely was able to get into the backfield and pressure Twomey on a couple of occasions. Curit also said he didn’t think the offense looked comfortable against The Ranger defense, but there is plenty of room ”“ and time ”“ for improvement.

Biddeford plays another preseason scrimmage at Cheverus on Friday before opening the regular season at home against Bonny Eagle on Sept. 6.
