
Dorothy graduated from Portland High School in 1942 and married her childhood sweetheart, Joseph C. Fisher Jr. (1919-1986). From that union, four daughters were born. In 1954 she married Benjamin Sellers (1925-1991) and was blessed with one son and three daughters.
Dorothy was a member of the Church of Christ.
Dorothy was an active and dedicated member of the Brunswick Naval Air Station Navy Wives Club for many years, appearing in the Navy Times magazine. She was instrumental in organizing family activities during BNAS VP-26 deployments.
While a dedicated homemaker, Dorothy also worked as an elevator operator at Porteous, Mitchell & Braun as well as a cashier and retail representative at Brunswick Naval Air Station PX and JC Penney.
Dorothy was a valuable staff member of Mt. Ararat High School in Topsham, Maine, when it first opened its doors in 1973. She started students’ days in the Registrar’s Office and later worked in the Business Education Department where she was able to share her love of shorthand and speed typing. Her greatest joy working with the students of Mt. Ararat was found in the Industrial Arts Department where she assisted in Reading Enrichment Activities. Dorothy saw a need and made sure it was met.
At Mt. Ararat High School Dorothy was known for giving out anything from lunch money to good advice for anyone who came to her in need.
Staying active in politics and current events, Dorothy welcomed the opportunity to vote for the first Black president of the United States. She thoroughly enjoyed discussing world and national news as well as exploring cutting edge medical technology.
She was always proud of her girls and their achievements. She was a mother to all who knew her. Anyone who was fortunate to have known Dorothy knew a friend.
Dorothy was an avid shopper, loved to read and listen to all types of music. She frequently longed for a good seafood dinner and a fresh breath of Maine air.
Dorothy is survived by five daughters, Theresa Lynn Haynes (Leo) of Virginia Beach, VA; Susan Gail Linton (Van Herron) of Hampton, VA; Pamela Jeanne Hayes (David) of South Portland, Maine; Verna Rebecca Lake (James) of Mobile, AL and Kimberly Wheatley Campbell (Danny) of Chesterfield, VA.
She is predeceased by a son, Louis Benjamin Sellers (1959) and two daughters, Donna- Rae Fisher (2009) and Dianne Lucille Hyatt (2003).
Dorothy is also survived by fifteen grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. She had many lifelong friends who loved her dearly.
A memorial service will be held at Green Memorial A.M.E. Zion Church at 46 Sheridan Street, Portland, Maine on Friday, August 30, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. Danny Campbell, Minister, Southwest Church of Christ, Chesterfield, VA. will officiate the service.
