KENNEBUNK — A fire that started in a clothes dryer caused extensive smoke damage to the interior of a Kennebunk home, but the owners should be able to return in the near future.

Lt. Jay Byron said the fire at 24 Intervale Road in Kennebunk was reported around noon Sunday.

The fire had begun to spread into other areas of the residence, but firefighters were able to bring the fire under control in about 20 minutes.

Byron said the fire caused extensive smoke damage to the single-story ranch. No one was at home when the fire started. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
