Yard Sale
On Saturday, Aug. 17, Windham Historical Society is holding a huge yard sale with estate clean-outs, from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Gray Road side of the Society’s Village Green, Gray Road, in Windham Center. There will be bargains galore on old tools, household items, furniture, books, maps and much more.
Hunter Safety
The Town Clerk’s Office is accepting 45 registrants for a Hunter Safety Class being held on two consecutive Saturdays, Sept. 14 and Sept. 21, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days at the East Windham Fire Station. The cost is $5. Call 892-1900 to sign up.
Food Pantry
Windham Food Pantry will be closed on Monday, Sept. 2, for Labor Day. Senior pick-up will be from 10 a.m. to noon on Tuesday, Sept. 3. Call 892-1906 if you have any questions. The food pantry is open Monday through Thursday, except for holidays and is available to residents in need. The Clothes Closet is open Monday and Tuesday mornings; clothing is free.
Lobster Dinner
Windham Kiwanis is hosting their annual “Lobstah” dinner on Saturday, Aug. 17, from 4:30 to 6 p.m. at the Little Meeting House in North Windham at Boody’s Corner. The menu includes lobster, corn on the cob, coleslaw, chips, beverages and more. Cost is $15 per person and tickets can be purchased from any Kiwanian, at the door or by calling 892-3684.
Marriage Intentions
Recent marriage intentions filed with the Windham Town Clerk’s office include the following: Justin Lawrence and Ruth Henderson, both from Walden, New York; Joseph Petty and Lorrie Donahue, both from Windham; and Kevin Anderson and Sarah Knights, both from Windham.
Free Community Meal
On Saturday, Aug. 31, a free community meal will be served at Christ Chapel, 37 Northern Pines Road off Route 85 near Crescent Lake, Raymond. The meal is open to all ages from the surrounding communities. Menu is chicken and rice soup, casseroles, salads and desserts and will be continually served, buffet style from 4:30-6 p.m.
Driver Safety Class
Register before Sept. 1 for the AARP Driver Safety Class to be presented at Windham Public Library on Saturday, Sept. 7, from 9 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Registration fee is $12 for AARP members, $14 for others. Advance registration is required. Call John Hammond, 655-4943.
Help for Vets
On Wednesday, Aug. 28, Veterans Service Officer Phyllis D’Orsay is available at the Windham Veterans Center, as she is on the second and fourth Wednesdays every month, from 9 a.m. until noon. She assists veterans, widows of veterans and dependents with questions about benefits and other information. If you have questions of a military nature, stop in and get some answers. No appointment is needed. The Veterans Center is in North Windham, off Route 302, in back of the Windham Mall. Watch for the signs.
New Medicare seminar
On Tuesday, Aug. 20, the Southern Maine Agency on Aging (SMAA) will offer a Medicare seminar and counseling for the Lakes Region at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church at 919 Roosevelt Trail, Windham. A “Welcome to Medicare” seminar is scheduled from 10 a.m. to noon. In addition to the Medicare seminar, there will be one-on-one counseling with volunteer Medicare advocates available from 9 a.m. to noon. The seminar and counseling are intended to help you sort through your Medicare options, answer questions and to help you enroll. In addition to Medicare assistance, counseling on tax and rent rebate, food stamps, and fuel assistance can be arranged. Please call the Southern Maine Agency on Aging to register for an upcoming seminar or to make a one-on-one appointment with a Medicare Advocate at 207-396-6500 or 1-800-427-7411. Seminar walk-ins can usually be accommodated. Further opportunities for these services will occur monthly on the first and third Tuesdays at the same times and location. Bingo
Like Bingo? Every Tuesday through Oct. 29, the Standish Memorial American Legion Post 128 holds bingo games at the Windham Veterans Center. Doors open at 4 p.m., Bingo at 6:30 p.m., refreshments available. WTA pull tabs. For more information, call 642-5583.
Steamboats on Sebago
Learn all about the days when steamboats were a necessary part of the transportation and travel industries in the Sebago Lake towns. On Monday, Aug. 26, the Windham Historical Society presents a public program at 7 p.m. at the Windham Veterans Center, with thorough description and many photographs.
