Running for a Reason
On Sunday, Aug. 25, the second annual Running for a Reason 5K will be held at Saint Joseph’s College. Pre-register for the 5K by Saturday, Aug. 24, at 4 p.m. The cost is $17 for each individual or $12 each for a family of four. Last-minute registrations (day of event) will be $22 for each individual including families. This year’s route will begin at the college, turning left onto Whites Bridge Road, then left onto Hearthside Drive and back to the college. The new race route this year allows for occasional breezes and spectacular views of Sebago Lake.
Several years ago, the Standish Recreation Committee started this race to coincide with Trails Day, partnering with the Gorham and Windham Recreation Departments. When the race first started they used the Mountain Division Trail, which started at the Otter Ponds and ended at Shaw Park in Gorham. This event occurred for many years on this day as a fundraiser for the Recreation Department. Over the years the committee discussed ways to make this a bigger event and a decision was made two years ago to move the event to a road race. They hired a timing company to take over the results and they changed the event name to Running for Reason, as they wanted to make this a community event that would help the Recreation Department as well as other organizations in the community.
Last year’s beneficiary was the Johnson Field Playground Committee, which were raising funds for a new playground at Johnson Field, located on Route 35. Michelle Rowe, chair of the Recreation Committee, is happy to share that the playground will be completed this fall.
The Volunteer in Police Service (VIPS) have been chosen as the 2013 beneficiary organization. The VIPS Program provides support and resources for agencies interested in developing or enhancing a volunteer program and for citizens who wish to volunteer their time and skills with a community law enforcement agency.
The Standish Recreation Committee, a nine-member team appointed by the Town Council, has openings for anyone interested. Visit www.standisrec.com for more information.
