Two local residents and two people from Brooklyn, N.Y., were arrested over the weekend in Wiscasset and charged with possession of and trafficking in heroin.

Agents with the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency said the four were involved in a heroin trafficking ring in which the drug was transported from New York to Midcoast Maine.

On Friday, Travis Crowley, 31, and Carol Crowley, 25, both of Wiscasset, were arrested after MDEA agents from the Mid Coast District Task Force, with officers from the Wiscasset Police Department and Lincoln County and Sagadahoc County sheriff ’s offices, executed a search warrant at their Wiscasset home.

According to a release from MDEA Cmdr. Scott Pelletier, agents seized more than 3 grams of heroin, as well as inositol, a substance the couple allegedly was using to cut the heroin. Also seized were methadone, Suboxone and fentanyl patches — synthetic opioids — none of which were prescribed to the Crowleys, according to Pelletier.

“Evidence at the scene indicates that the Crowleys were purchasing heroin then mixing it with inositol, commonly referred to as ‘cutting’ to increase the volume of the heroin,” the release states. “A gram of heroin after cutting typically produces 50 bags or doses of heroin which sells for approximately $30 a bag in Lincoln and Sagadahoc (counties). Agents were able to determine the Crowleys’ source of supply for their heroin was two people from New York City.”

Both Ayala and Miranda have extensive criminal histories in New York, according to Pelletier.

The Crowleys each were released on unsecured bonds from the Sagadahoc County Sheriff ’s Office in Bath.

The arrests are the result of an investigation of the illegal distribution of heroin in Lincoln and Sagadahoc counties, according to Pelletier. Additional charges are expected in the near future, Pelletier said.
