Weather or Not
Well, things have been looking up weather-wise. It has been a summer of heat and moisture. I’m hoping we can squeak out two weeks of low humidity and sunshine. These last two days have been just that, but I just have a feeling it won’t last. The storms have been wreaking havoc. Robert Fogg, of Naples-based Q-Team Tree Removal service, report that unruly trees and limbs have been falling due to severe weather. During this brief hiatus, it might be a good time to go out and assess what potential damage your untrimmed trees may cause and perhaps take some action. Prevention is the best defense. All the rain has been good for local growing, as my blueberry bushes are yielding plenty this season.
Back to School
School is only weeks away, believe it or not. With the changing seasons, change is only natural. Lake Region Middle School is shaking their system up, combining teams and even grades on the same teams. There is an informational meeting, Wednesday, Aug. 14, at 6 p.m. at the middle school on Kansas Road. At Songo Locks School we say goodbye to the well liked guidance counselor Mrs. Gilbert, as she heads over to Windham Middle School to assume a job closer to her home. Overall, 30 new staff members have been hired to fill existing positions. New student enrollment for the middle school will take place Monday, Aug. 19, from 8-10 a.m., no appointment necessary. Please bring birth certificate, immunization, records, and proof of residency. The school is located at 204 Kansas Road. Call 647-8403 for more information. The first day of school for SAD 61 is Wednesday, Aug. 28.
Naples Town Hall
When I heard the Casco Town Office was experiencing a busier than usual summer, I thought I would ask the Naples Town Office staff how they were faring. Judy Whynot, the town clerk, reported this summer was not busier than usual. Laurie Hodge, the Town’s Deputy Town Clerk, commented that perhaps it didn’t seem overly busy due to the few extra hours that Assistant Clerk Kim Thompson has been working. The town office was closed for an hour last week so the staff could pay their respects at the funeral of Jake Broush, a former appeals board member. Jake and his wife, Pat, have been long, part-time residents of Naples.
The Way It Was
If you are interested in seeing some really interesting photos from the construction phases of the Causeway Restoration Project, check out the Naples Main Street Facebook page. I was amazed to see the pictures of the amphitheatre’s progression, as well as the bridge.
Local Family on the Move!
The Gianatassio family of Naples definitely get around. Last year, it was a family trip to Washington, D.C. This summer the clan headed to Montreal, Quebec, for a few days. On their trip, the family took the Lachine Rapids boat tour, which is a whitewater rafting trip on a jet boat! This is not their first trip to the city. When they return, they promise to share some tips on what to do and how to do it for anyone who might be interested in visiting, like our family is.
The Sound of Music
Sundays are musical here in Naples. Each Sunday in the summer you can hear a variety of musical genres livening up the Village Green. This week, Aug. 11, the Lighthouse Jubilee Singers will perform the music of the 50s and 60s along with some gospel. On Sunday, Aug. 18, you can enjoy country and Rock ‘n’ Roll tunes as Stevie Cee and The Mrs. perform. Concerts run from 6-7 p.m. Bring a blanket or lawn chair and enjoy.
Indoor Yard Sale
Join the Edes Fall Sewing Circle for their Indoor Yard Sale this Saturday, Aug. 10, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Edes Falls Community Center. Sounds like a great thing to do during those super-hot summer day hours.
Happy Anniversary
Congratulations to Dick and Daphne Myers of Naples who are celebrating 50 years of marriage. The couple will join with family and friends this Saturday at the American Legion in Naples for a lovely afternoon celebration.
