Andrew Cashman has resigned as chairman of the Brunswick Democratic Town Committee to work as treasurer in Ralph Tucker’s campaign for Maine House District 63.

Cashman, an attorney at the Augusta branch of Preti Flaherty, is nearing the end of his first two-year term as committee chairman. He was appointed in August 2011 to serve the remainder of then- chairman Greg Howard’s term, after Howard left town for a new job.

The end of Cashman’s town term nicely matches the beginning of Tucker’s campaign.

“The timing is just right,” he said. “We had a really good team, but I’m really excited about Ralph’s candidacy and I wanted to be able to dedicate my time to work (for him).”

In his absence, BDTC Vice Chairwoman Jackie Sartoris will serve as interim leader until the committee selects a replacement in January.

The committee refrains from endorsing specific Democratic Primary candidates. Cashman will remain a town committee member and also holds a spot in the Cumberland County Democratic Committee.

He said he is excited about helping Tucker, a longtime friend, in his bid for the state representative’s seat currently held by Charles Priest, also a Democrat, who is prohibited by term limits from seeking re-election.

“(Tucker) is full-speedahead in reaching out to people, and he’s been meeting with a lot of people,” Cashman said. “He really has a great mind and a great temperament for Augusta.”
