BRUNSWICK — Starting this fall, hungry students at eight Mid-coast elementary schools will receive enough food for the weekend stuffed into their backpacks every Friday.

Calling it the Backpack Program, Brunswick-based Mid Coast Hunger Prevention Program will announce the campaign’s kickoff at a 10 a.m. news conference Monday featuring U.S. Sen. Angus King, a Brunswick independent.

The announcement will be at the main entrance of Coffin Elementary School, 20 Barrows St.

Created in collaboration with Good Shepherd Food Bank, the program will be the largest of its kind in Maine, according to Karen Parker, MCHPP’s executive director. It will serve more than 200 children in eight elementary schools in the Mid-coast who often go hungry once school lets out for the weekend.
